Which one should you buy?

For most Australian backyards the Husqvarna Automower 305 at around $1,499 is the right buy. Swedish engineering with 30+ years of robot-mower R&D, handles 500m² lawns (most AU suburban backyards), cuts grass to ideal height continuously rather than the once-weekly long-cut that stresses lawn growth, and works in light rain (won't get bricked by a Sydney summer thunderstorm). The Automower app schedules + tracks via GPS, and Husqvarna's AU service network handles warranty repairs locally rather than via overseas RMA.

If you want to skip the perimeter-wire install that the Husqvarna requires, the Segway Navimow i105 at about $1,299 is the alternative pick. Navimow uses RTK GPS + visual sensing to know its boundaries, no buried wire around the lawn edge, which saves a 2-4 hour install day on most yards and lets you change the mowing boundary later without re-trenching. $200 cheaper than the Husqvarna, but rated for slightly smaller yards (450m²) and the RTK system needs clear sky view (under thick tree canopy the GPS lock can drop). Pick this only if avoiding the wire install matters more than the slightly smaller area coverage.

One honest limitation: robot mowers aren't a complete replacement for a standard petrol or electric mower if you have steep slopes (over 15° gradient), seriously thick kikuyu/buffalo grass that needs occasional aggressive cutting, or a yard over 800m². For larger or hillier blocks, a 36V cordless or petrol mower is still the right tool, covered in our best lawn mower guide. Robot mowers are the right answer for flat-to-rolling suburban lawns up to about 500m²; bigger or steeper, you need the conventional tool too.
