Ceramic, melamine or paper: we compare the best Christmas plates sold in Australia, from a porcelain heirloom dinner plate to a fifty-count paper pack, checked for live stock, material, size and dishwasher and microwave safety.
Prices checked 20 August 2026 on Amazon AU and subject to change.
Why are Christmas plates harder to buy than they look?
Because the decision is not about the pattern. It is about how many people are eating, whether the meal happens indoors or on a deck in 34 degree heat, and whether you want something you unpack every December for twenty years or something you tip into the recycling at 4pm. Get that order right and the pattern picks itself.
Search Christmas plates in Australia and you land on retailer category pages. None tell you what matters: ceramic is a storage commitment, melamine is the only sane answer if kids or a windy backyard are involved, and good paper plates no longer read as a compromise. We went through the Amazon Australia festive tableware pool, cut the platters and trays sold as plates, checked live stock and pricing on every survivor, and pulled ratings and review counts.
One honest note first. Amazon Australia is not where the deep ceramic Christmas dinnerware ranges live: Villeroy and Boch, Ashdene, West Elm and Kitchen Warehouse carry broader festive ceramic collections in their own stores. What Amazon does well is single statement plates, melamine sets and the disposable tier.
What are the best Christmas plates in Australia?
If you want one plate that becomes a tradition, buy the Villeroy and Boch Toy's Delight Specials Dinner Plate. Fine porcelain, 27 cm across, dishwasher safe and microwave safe, and it carries the highest star rating of the seven products we recommend here at 4.8. It is sold as a single plate, so you build the set one Christmas at a time, which is how heirloom dinnerware actually accumulates.
If you need four matching plates on the table this year without anyone holding their breath, the Viynran 10 inch Christmas Melamine Plate Set is the value answer. Four 25.4 cm melamine plates with watercolour Santa, snowman, reindeer and squirrel designs, dishwasher safe, and light enough at 0.22 kg that a six-year-old can carry one.
If you are feeding a crowd and the washing up is the enemy, the Confettiville Holly Gold Foil Paper Plates are the cheapest option in this guide. Fifty 22.9 cm plates with a scalloped gold-foil edge, which photograph far better than the price suggests.
Below those three sit a shatterproof Lenox melamine set for outdoor lunches, a shaped novelty plate for the dessert end, small ceramic tree plates for canapes, and a plates-and-napkins box for 25.
How do our Christmas plate picks compare?
Read the material column first, because it decides everything else. Ceramic and porcelain go in the dishwasher and often the microwave, melamine in the dishwasher but never the microwave, paper in the bin.
Availability first: every pick was checked against Amazon Australia for live stock and buy-box price, and anything unavailable was cut.
Ratings and volume: star ratings and review counts were pulled per product, and headline picks needed a real review base.
Specs from the listing only: material, diameter in centimetres, piece count and dishwasher or microwave safety come from the listing, never from guesswork.
Scope discipline: these are dinner, side and dessert plates. Platters, trays, placemats and tablecloths were excluded.
Best Christmas plates overall: the plate you add to every year
The Villeroy and Boch Toy's Delight Specials Dinner Plate is the pick if you want festive dinnerware that outlives the tree it sits under. Premium porcelain, 27 cm in diameter and 0.55 kg, high-gloss, in the nostalgic red, white and green Toy's Delight motif. The listing confirms both dishwasher safe and microwave safe, which is not a given in decorated festive ceramics where metallic trim rules the microwave out.

Villeroy & Boch
Villeroy & Boch Toy's Delight Specials Dinner Plate, Red
4.8(317)
It is the one plate here that works as an heirloom rather than a seasonal buy. Premium porcelain at a true 27 cm dinner size, listed as both dishwasher and microwave safe, in a pattern the brand keeps in production so you can add two plates a year until the table matches. It also holds the highest star rating of the seven products we recommend.

It is the only pick in this guide sold as a single plate rather than a set. That sounds like a downside until you think about how heirloom dinnerware accumulates. You buy two the first year, two more the next, and by the time you are hosting properly you have a full table of a pattern still in production. Buying twelve pieces at once is how people end up with a boxed pattern they stopped liking by the third Christmas.
At 27 cm it is a genuine dinner plate, not an oversized charger, so ham, roast vegetables and salad fit without looking crowded. It holds 4.8 stars from 317 reviews, the highest rating of the seven products we recommend here. If you are building a festive table from scratch, this is the piece worth spending on and the rest can be cheap. Our tablecloth guide covers the sizing maths.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Cost per place setting is the obvious one: a table of six is six purchases. It is porcelain, so it can chip in a crowded dishwasher rack and needs proper storage rather than stacking with everyday plates. The motif is also specifically Christmas, not a plate for March.
Best value Christmas plates: four matching plates without the fear factor
The Viynran 10 inch Christmas Melamine Plate Set gives you what most people actually want: four matching festive dinner plates in one box that survive being dropped. Each is 25.4 cm across, 1.9 cm deep and 0.22 kg, semi-gloss, with watercolour designs across four characters, so everyone gets their own.

4.6(34)
The most efficient way to get four matching festive dinner plates on the table this year. Melamine is the right material for an Australian Christmas because lunch happens outdoors, and at 0.22 kg a plate nobody is nervous handing one to a child. The listing confirms dishwasher safe, which is the specification that separates decent melamine from the cheap stuff.

Melamine is the material Australians should default to for Christmas and rarely do. Christmas lunch here happens in summer, which means it happens outside, or partly outside, or at least with the doors open. Porcelain on an outdoor table is a bad bet, and at 0.22 kg a plate this does not fight you when you carry four at once.
The listing confirms these are dishwasher safe, the spec that separates decent melamine from cheap melamine, since poor melamine crazes and dulls after a few cycles. The 10 inch diameter is just under standard dinner-plate size. At 4.6 stars from 34 reviews the review base is smaller than some picks here, which is why it sits as the value pick rather than the outright winner.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Melamine is never microwave safe, and the listing confirms this set is not microwaveable, so reheated leftovers need a different plate. The print sits on the surface rather than under a glaze, so hard cutting with a steak knife is a risk over time. Four plates means a table of eight needs two sets.
Best budget Christmas plates: a big crowd and no washing up
The Confettiville Holly Gold Foil Paper Plates are the cheapest option in this guide and the one we would use for a large, casual Christmas. Fifty 22.9 cm plates with a scalloped edge, holly pattern and gold-foil rim. The listing describes them as biodegradable, lightweight and sturdy, and they carry 4.5 stars from 356 reviews.

Confettiville
Confettiville Christmas Paper Plates, 50-Count Disposable Christmas Party Supplies, Holly, Gold Foil Scalloped Edge, 9 Inches
4.5(356)
The cheapest option in this guide and genuinely the right call for a big, casual Christmas. Fifty plates covers a twenty-person gathering across mains and dessert without four dishwasher cycles on Christmas night, and the scalloped gold-foil rim means they photograph like something far dearer than they are.

The reason to take disposable seriously is volume. Nobody in a normal Australian house owns enough plates for a big Christmas gathering across mains, dessert and picking, or wants four dishwasher cycles on Christmas night.
The gold foil is the detail that makes these work rather than look apologetic. Cheap festive paper plates print a full-colour Santa across the middle, which then sits under your food looking like a school fete. These use a scalloped rim and a foil edge, so the pattern frames the food. At 22.9 cm they are side-plate size.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
They are paper, so not dishwasher safe or microwaveable, both stated on the listing. They flex under a heavy load of hot roast and gravy, so double them up for carved meat with sauce rather than carrying one across a lawn. Fifty is a lot for a small household.
Best Christmas plates for outdoors and kids at the table
The Lenox Holiday 4-Piece Melamine Dinner Plate Set is the one to buy if the meal is on the deck and children are involved. Four 26.7 cm melamine plates, 1.3 cm thick, in the red and green holly and berry motif Lenox has run since the mid-1970s. The listed material features are what you want outdoors: shatterproof, lightweight, dishwasher safe.
Four 26.7 cm shatterproof melamine plates in the holly and berry pattern Lenox has run since the mid-1970s. At 4.5 stars from 519 reviews it is the most-reviewed product in this guide, which for melamine matters: the material either holds its finish through repeated dishwasher cycles or goes chalky, and volume of feedback is the only real signal on that. Stock runs thin, so check twice.

What earns it a place over cheaper melamine is the review base. At 4.5 stars from 519 reviews it is the most-reviewed product in this guide, which for melamine matters more than for ceramic. Melamine either holds its finish through repeated dishwasher cycles or goes chalky, and hundreds of reviews is the only real signal on that.
The holly and berry pattern is the safest festive design here. It is not a cartoon, it does not date, and it sits happily next to plain white side plates or a board of cheese. Stock is thinner than the rest of the guide, so if it shows as low stock when you look, that is the listing rather than an error.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Like all melamine it is not microwaveable, confirmed on the listing. You are paying for a heritage pattern and a proven finish rather than the substrate, a fair trade only if you use it for a decade. At around 0.4 kg each, they stack taller than thinner melamine.
Best novelty Christmas plates for the dessert end of the table
The Whaline Christmas Lights Shape Paper Plates are shaped like an oversized fairy light bulb, 26.4 cm long by 17 cm wide, in red, pink and green with a gold-foil filament and lamp cap printed on. Thirty plates per pack, glossy paper. It earns a place because part of the table should not take itself seriously.

Thirty paper plates shaped like an oversized fairy light bulb, 26.4 by 17 cm, with a gold foil filament print. Excellent for dessert and grazing and poor for a roast, because the usable flat area is smaller than the overall dimensions suggest. The shape does more for a kids' table than any pattern on a round plate.

Shaped plates are excellent for dessert and terrible for mains. Pavlova, trifle and a scoop of ice cream sit fine on an irregular plate. A roast dinner does not, because the useful flat area is smaller than the overall dimensions suggest. Treat it as a dessert and grazing plate and it is a good buy at 4.4 stars from 115 reviews.
They also solve the kids' table problem better than a plain plate does. Children who would not touch a formal place setting will absolutely eat off a giant Christmas light, and you can set them out as decoration before anyone sits down. Thirty plates is enough for a gathering to have dessert without leaving four unopened packs in the cupboard in January.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The usable surface is the real limitation. The 26.4 cm measurement includes the lamp cap, so the food area is smaller than a 26 cm round plate. Paper again means no dishwasher and no microwave, both on the listing. If your scheme is strictly red and green, the pink plates go to the kids.
Best small Christmas plates for canapes, cheese and dessert
The Honeydak Christmas Tree Ceramic Plates are six ceramic plates of about 15 cm, in green, red and white with a tree pattern and glossy finish. Small plates are the most underrated part of a festive table, covering the jobs a dinner plate does badly: canapes, cake with coffee, cheese after the main, mince pies at any hour.

Being ceramic, these are dishwasher safe and the listing also confirms them as microwaveable. That combination matters more on a small plate than a large one, because small plates get used constantly across the day and go straight back through the machine.
They work as serving pieces as well as eating plates. The listing suggests using them for lollies or as trays, and at about 15 cm they suit setting out around a room with nuts or shortbread on Christmas Eve. If you are also sorting the larger sharing pieces, our serving platter guide covers the sizes that get used.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
They are small. About 15 cm suits an appetiser or dessert, not a side plate for a main, and photography can make them look larger. The set weighs 1.3 kg for six, so it takes real cupboard space. The 4.2 star rating is the lowest here, usually a sign of pattern variance or an odd chipped arrival, so unpack them the day they land.
Best Christmas plates and napkins in one box
The Dereinwo Christmas Paper Plates and Napkins set is the pragmatic option for a big table: 25 paper plates at 22.9 cm and 25 matching napkins that open out to 33 cm square. The pattern is white with green holly, red berries and pine, with Merry Christmas in gold lettering and a matte finish.

This is the only pick in this guide that arrives with matching napkins, and that is the reason it is here. Coordinating disposable tableware is a genuine annoyance: plates from one seller, napkins from another, and the two greens do not match. One box for 25 people removes a decision and a delivery.
The napkins are the more useful half of the deal. At 33 cm square unfolded they are a proper dinner napkin rather than a cocktail serviette, so they cover a lap. On a long table with a plain cloth, a folded napkin on each plate does more visual work than an expensive plate ever will. At 4.5 stars from 95 reviews, and BPA free per the listing, it is a straightforward buy for a group.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Twenty five plates is one per guest, optimistic for a meal running lunch through dessert, so buy two boxes or pair it with the Confettiville plates. The plates are not dishwasher safe or microwaveable, as with all paper. The gold Merry Christmas text is prominent, so if you prefer no words, the Confettiville holly design is quieter.
Which Christmas plates should you buy?
Start with who is eating and where, and let the material follow.
Your situation
Our pick
You want one plate that becomes a tradition and you will add to it yearly
Six things, roughly in the order they should influence the decision.
Material, before anything else. Ceramic and porcelain are the formal option: most are dishwasher safe, many are microwave safe, and they chip. Melamine is shatterproof plastic: dishwasher safe, never microwave safe, light, and the right answer outdoors and for children. Paper is disposable: no washing, no storage, no reheating, and modern foil-edged designs beat old party-shop stock.
Diameter, in centimetres. A dinner plate is roughly 26 to 28 cm, a side or salad plate 20 to 23 cm, an appetiser or dessert plate 15 to 19 cm. Listings love inches and often quote packaging dimensions rather than the plate, so read the item dimensions line rather than the title. A 9 inch plate is 22.9 cm, which is a large side plate rather than a dinner plate, and that trips people up constantly.
Pack size against your real guest count. Count one dinner plate and one dessert plate per guest, then add two spares for breakages and second helpings. Eight guests means ten of each. Twelve guests almost always means two sets, or disposables for one course. Melamine and ceramic come in fours or sixes, so do the division first.
Dishwasher and microwave safety, as stated on the listing. Assume nothing. Metallic trim on ceramic rules out the microwave, melamine is never microwave safe, and some decorated ceramics are hand wash only. That is the difference between a plate you use and a plate you resent.
Whether it survives an Australian summer Christmas. Overseas guides never account for this. Our Christmas is outdoors, hot and often involves a trestle table and a breeze. Paper plates blow away, porcelain on a hard surface breaks, and melamine handles both. That is why melamine dominates festive tableware here in a way it does not in the northern hemisphere.
Whether the pattern is still available next year. If you plan to build a set over time, buy into a brand that keeps its pattern in production. Villeroy and Boch, Lenox and Spode all run continuing Christmas lines. A no-name seller's pattern will very likely be gone by next October, so buy the whole quantity you need in one go.
How do you care for and store Christmas plates between years?
Christmas plates spend eleven months in a cupboard and one month in use, so storage does more damage than dining. The biggest single cause of chipped festive ceramics is stacking them directly on each other in a box that gets shifted around a garage.
For ceramic and porcelain, put something soft between every plate. Felt dividers are ideal, but a spare paper plate works just as well. Store them flat rather than on edge, keep the stack under about eight plates high, and keep them out of an uninsulated garage or roof space where heat swings find weak points in a glaze.
Melamine is more forgiving but has one enemy: heat. Never microwave it, never leave it near a hot oven vent, and avoid the top rack directly under an exposed dishwasher element. Overheated melamine goes cloudy and sometimes warps, and it does not come back. Skip abrasive scourers, and hand-wash it if the pattern is printed on the surface rather than moulded in.
Paper plates keep indefinitely if they stay dry and flat. In a damp laundry cupboard they cup and warp and foil edges tarnish, so reseal the sleeve and store it flat with the rest of the Christmas box. One habit worth adopting: unpack festive dinnerware the week it arrives, not the day you need it. A chipped arrival is far easier to resolve in October than on 23 December, and a decent set of tea towels costs less than replacing one broken plate.
You'll also want these for the Christmas table
Plates are one line item on a table that has five or six. These are the pieces that make the difference.
The competition: what we looked at and did not pick
The Lenox Merry Grinchmas Dinner Plates are a set of four ceramic plates at 4.8 stars, and the pattern is charming if yours is a Grinch household. We left it out on price, and the plates are smaller than you would expect for that outlay.
Spode's Christmas Tree melamine dinner plates, an 11 inch shatterproof set of four, are the closest thing to a straight upgrade on our melamine picks, and the pattern is arguably the most recognisable festive dinnerware design going. They sit above the price band this guide covers, so check the Spode range at Australian homewares retailers first.
Villeroy and Boch's annual collector edition plate rates highly, but it is a decorative collector piece released in a numbered series rather than something you plate a roast on. For the brand's porcelain in actual dining use, the Toy's Delight Specials plate is the practical choice.
We also excluded a large number of listings that appear under Christmas plates but are not plates: melamine serving trays, charcuterie boards and rectangular platters. Several cheap paper multipacks were cut for having too few reviews to say anything useful, and a couple of ceramic sets were cut on stock.
Christmas plates FAQ
What plates should you use for Christmas dinner?
For a seated Christmas dinner indoors, use ceramic or porcelain dinner plates of 26 to 28 cm. For an outdoor lunch or a table with children, use melamine, which is shatterproof and dishwasher safe but never microwave safe. For a big buffet gathering, use good quality paper plates with a foil edge and keep ceramic for the main course.
Are melamine Christmas plates dishwasher safe?
Good quality melamine is dishwasher safe and both melamine sets in this guide state that on their listings. Cheap melamine goes cloudy and dull after repeated cycles, so check the listing specification rather than assuming. Melamine is never microwave safe, because the material can overheat and warp.
How many Christmas plates do you need for 8 or 12 guests?
Count one dinner plate and one dessert plate per guest, then add two spare of each for breakages and second helpings. Eight guests means ten dinner plates and ten dessert plates, and twelve guests means fourteen of each, which usually means two sets or disposables for one course.
Can you put Christmas plates in the microwave?
It depends on the material and the decoration. Two of our picks list microwave safe on the listing: the Villeroy and Boch porcelain plate and the Honeydak ceramic set. Melamine is never microwave safe, paper plates are not microwaveable, and any ceramic with metallic trim should stay out of the microwave.
What are the best Christmas plate brands in Australia?
Villeroy and Boch, Lenox and Spode are the heritage names that keep their Christmas patterns in production year after year, which matters if you want to build a set gradually. Ashdene is the strongest Australian option for festive ceramics, and West Elm and Kitchen Warehouse carry seasonal ranges in their own stores.
What else should you sort before Christmas?
Plates are the middle of the table. These cover the rest of it.
