The Best Nativity Sets in Australia (2026)

By ·20 August 2026·11 min read

A nativity set gets handled every December, so it has to be chosen on material, scale and piece count rather than on the photo. We screened the Amazon Australia pool, filtered out the angel and fairy figurines that share the search results, and locked seven picks: a Willow Tree heirloom set, a Kurt Adler scene with the stable included, a wooden budget set, two porcelain options, a chunky resin set kids can move, and a compact Holy Family group for a small flat.

A nativity set is one of the few Christmas decorations that gets handled rather than hung. Someone unpacks it, someone argues about where the wise men stand, and a child walks off with a sheep. That is why the decision differs from a wreath or a string of lights: you are choosing an object that has to survive being picked up every December for the next twenty years.

Australian buyers get a narrower field than American ones. Most of what you can order here lands in three groups: painted resin sets in the mid range, porcelain sets that look formal on a mantel, and small wooden sets built for a shelf. We read the listings, specifications and review histories for sets genuinely in stock here, screened out the angel and fairy figurines that keep turning up in the same search results, and picked seven.

What is the best nativity set in Australia?

For most Australian homes it is the Willow Tree 6-Piece Nativity Set. Six sculpted resin figures in a natural, wood-effect finish, no painted facial features, the tallest piece 24.1 cm. It carries 4.9 stars from 10,570 ratings, which makes it both the highest rated of our seven picks and, by a wide margin, the most reviewed. It is also the dearest thing here, and it does not include a stable.

If you want a complete scene in one box, the Kurt Adler 11-Piece Nativity Set with Stable gives you the Holy Family, the wise men, the animals and a timber-look stable to put them in. If you want the smallest sensible spend, the NEROSUN 13-Piece Wooden Nativity Set is the cheapest of our seven picks, has the highest piece count, and is the only one of our picks whose listed material is wood rather than resin, porcelain or a resin and stone mix.

Beyond those three, the choice comes down to material and where the set will live. Porcelain suits a mantel nobody touches. Resin suits a coffee table in a house with kids. Wood suits a narrow shelf where the figures should read as shapes rather than painted faces.

How do our nativity set picks compare?

Piece count is the first thing people sort on and the least useful: a 13-piece wooden set can occupy less shelf than a 6-piece resin one, because the pieces are smaller. Read piece count next to scale, then next to material. Tap any name to open that listing.

How did we evaluate these nativity sets?

  • We only shortlisted sets that are the product itself, not angel figurines, craft kits or single ornaments that share the search results.
  • Every pick was checked live for Australian availability and buy-box price, and separately for star rating and rating count, on the same day.
  • Piece count, material, finish and dimensions come from each listing's own published specifications, in centimetres where the seller gives them.
  • Where two sets were equally good, we favoured the one with the deeper rating history rather than the newer listing with a handful of votes.

Best overall nativity set: which one becomes the family heirloom?

The Willow Tree 6-Piece Nativity Set is the one to buy if you expect to still own it when your kids have their own place. It is a Susan Lordi design, sculpted in resin with a painted wood-effect finish in natural tones rather than the primary colours most resin sets use, and the figures have no painted facial features. That sounds like a small detail and it is the reason people keep buying it: the expression is carried by posture, so the set does not date the way a hand-painted face does.

Willow Tree 6-Piece Nativity Set, Behold The Awe and Wonder of The Christmas Story, Build a Family Holiday Tradition with Classic Nativity Collection, Sculpted Hand-Painted Figures

4.9(10,570)

A Susan Lordi design in resin with a natural, wood-effect finish and no painted faces, which is exactly why it does not date. At 4.9 stars from 10,570 ratings it is both the highest rated and the most reviewed of our seven picks, and the 24.1 cm tallest figure gives it the scale to work as a sculpture group on a hall table rather than as a decoration. No stable in the box, and it is the dearest pick here, but this is the set that gets handed on.

Six pieces, the Holy Family plus shepherd and animals, with the tallest figure at 24.1 cm. That is a substantial scale for a tabletop set. On a hall table or sideboard it reads as a sculpture group rather than a decoration, and it does not need a stable behind it to look finished. Weight is listed at about 1.3 kg, so the figures do not skate around when someone walks past.

The rating record is the strongest argument. At 4.9 stars from 10,570 ratings it is both the highest rated and the most reviewed of our seven picks, on a history long enough to cover many Christmases of unpacking and repacking. Sets that chip badly or lose paint tend to show it in a record that long. If you want a scene for the top of a bookcase and nothing more, buy something cheaper; if you want the object that gets handed on, this is it.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

There is no stable or crib structure in the box, and Willow Tree sells the creche separately, so the set as delivered is six standing figures. If you want a full crowd of wise men, shepherds and animals you are buying an expansion later. The unpainted faces are a matter of taste; some find them serene and some find them blank. And resin chips if it lands on tile.

Best nativity set with a stable included: what if you want the whole scene in one box?

The Kurt Adler 11-Piece Nativity Set with Stable is the practical answer for a first Christmas in a new place. It arrives as a complete scene, stable included, so nothing has to be sourced separately and nothing has to be improvised out of a shoebox on Christmas Eve.

Kurt Adler 7-Inch Resin Nativity Table Piece, 11 Piece Set with Stable

4.4(167)

The practical answer for a first Christmas in a new place: a complete scene, stable included, in one box. The stable is the part most sets leave out and the hardest thing to source separately later. Colours are traditional and fully painted, so it looks like the scene people picture when they hear the phrase. Rating history is shallow at 167 ratings, and the listing contradicts itself on piece count, but it removes every decision.

The listing describes an 11-piece set built around a timber-look resin stable, with the Holy Family, the wise men, the shepherd and the animals arranged in and around it. Material is listed as resin and paint with mica, which is the faint glitter you see under lamp light. Colours are traditional and fully painted, so it looks most like the scene people picture when they hear the phrase.

The stable is the part most sets leave out, and sourcing one separately later is harder and dearer than it sounds. If you are also buying the first tree for a new home, our Christmas tree guide covers how the tree scale and the mantel scale need to agree.

Rating history is the weak spot: 4.4 stars from 167 ratings is solid but shallow, and Kurt Adler quality varies between its many nativity lines. What it does well is remove decisions. One box, one scene, done.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The title says 11 pieces while the specification block lists 10, which almost certainly reflects whether the stable counts as a piece; assume 10 figures plus a stable. Mica in the finish sheds a little glitter in the first season, and painted resin at this price looks better from across a room than from arm's length.

Best budget nativity set: what is the least you can spend and still like it?

The NEROSUN 13-Piece Wooden Nativity Set is the cheapest of our seven picks and, unusually, does not read as the cheap option. It is a flat-cut wooden set in a minimal, pared-back style: silhouettes rather than sculpted figures, natural timber finish, no paint on the faces.

4.7(707)

The cheapest of our seven picks and, unusually, it does not read as the cheap option. Flat-cut silhouettes in natural timber, no gloss and no painted faces, which suits a modern Australian interior better than most sets in this price band. It is the only one of our picks whose listed material is wood, and the included tray means the whole scene lifts off a narrow shelf in one movement. At 4.7 stars from 707 ratings it has a deeper record than most sets at this price.

Thirteen pieces makes it the highest piece count of our picks, and it is the only one of our picks whose listed material is wood rather than resin, porcelain or a resin and stone mix. It comes with a tray listed at 16 cm by 18 cm, and the arranged scene occupies roughly 10 cm by 13 cm. That is small. On a wide sideboard it looks lost; on a narrow hall shelf or a windowsill it is exactly right, and the tray means the whole thing moves in one go.

At 4.7 stars from 707 ratings it has a deeper record than most sets at this price, which is reassuring for a listing much newer than the Kurt Adler and Lenox ones. The style suits a modern Australian interior better than most: pale timber, no gloss, nothing competing with the rest of the room.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Small means small: from more than a couple of metres away the scene reads as a cluster of shapes. Flat-cut wooden pieces are also less stable than weighted resin ones, so a bumped shelf topples several at once. There is no stable, only the tray. And plain timber shows moisture marks, so keep it off a kitchen bench.

Best porcelain nativity set: what belongs on a formal mantel?

The Lenox 7-Piece Mini Nativity Set is the one that reads as good china rather than as Christmas decor. Ivory porcelain with 24K gold accents, a glossy finish, and seven pieces covering the Holy Family, the three kings and an angel.

4.8(842)

Ivory porcelain with 24K gold accents and a glossy finish, covering the Holy Family, the three kings and an angel. The tallest figure is about 10.2 cm and the set weighs a little under 650 g, so it is a mantel or cabinet piece rather than a centrepiece. It ties with the Joseph's Studio group for the second highest star rating of our picks, and it is the only pick whose listing names a breakage replacement program.

Scale is deliberately restrained. The tallest figure is listed at about 10.2 cm and the set weighs a little under 650 g, so this is a mantel or cabinet set rather than a centrepiece. On dark timber the ivory and gold does a lot of work under warm lighting, and the small pieces stay tidy on a narrow ledge where a larger resin set would crowd.

Lenox rates 4.8 stars from 842 ratings, which ties it with the Joseph's Studio group for the second highest star rating of our picks, on a deep enough history to trust. It is also the only pick whose listing names a breakage replacement program, which matters more than it sounds for porcelain that gets unpacked once a year and stored for eleven months.

This is the set for a household without small children. It is the second dearest of our picks and it earns that on finish rather than size.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Porcelain does not chip, it shatters. Seven pieces is a modest cast, so there are no shepherds, no extra animals and no stable, and Lenox expansion pieces are not always easy to find in Australia. Glossy ivory picks up fingerprints, one more reason to keep it high. And at this scale it disappears on a large sideboard, so measure first.

Best all-white nativity set: what suits a minimal shelf?

The burton+BURTON 10-Piece Porcelain Nativity Set gives you the porcelain look without the formal china styling. It is a plain white miniature set, ten pieces, painted porcelain with no gold and no colour, sold for indoor display.

4.4(354)

Plain white painted porcelain, ten pieces, no gold and no colour. Ten pieces gives a fuller cast than a seven-piece set, and at about 930 g the individual miniatures have enough mass not to tip easily. The published dimension field on this listing is unusable, so buy it as a miniature set, and expect it to want decent light on a dark shelf.

All-white sets suit almost any palette. Against a white wall the set reads as texture; on a dark shelf, as a silhouette. Ten pieces gives a fuller cast than the Lenox seven, so you get the Holy Family plus wise men and animals, and the set weighs about 930 g, which for miniature porcelain means the figures have enough mass not to tip easily.

At 4.4 stars from 354 ratings it ties with the Kurt Adler set, and those two share the lowest star rating of our picks other than the OTC children's set. Read the pattern in the reviews rather than the number: the complaints cluster on packaging and on the occasional piece arriving damaged, which is the normal risk profile for miniature porcelain shipped long distance, not a sign of a poorly made object.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The published dimension field is unusable, so buy it as a miniature set and expect small figures. There is no stable. Plain white shows dust more than a painted set does, so it wants a wipe partway through December, and with no colour it needs decent light on a dark shelf.

Best nativity set for young children: what can actually be handled?

The OTC 9-Piece Mini Nativity Set is the one to buy if the point is that children move the figures around. It is chunky painted resin, nine pieces, and it includes a manger, so the whole scene can be set up and reset by a four-year-old without anything being at risk.

4.1(3,015)

Chunky painted resin with a manger included, so the scene can be set up and reset by a four-year-old without anything being at risk. The manger is about 13 cm by 15 cm with figures around 5 cm tall, and the whole set weighs 399 g. It holds the lowest average rating of our picks at 4.1 stars, but on 3,015 ratings, which is the second largest count here and tells you exactly what it is: robust rather than refined.

The manger is listed at about 13 cm by 15 cm with figures around 5 cm tall, and the packed set measures roughly 25 cm by 20 cm by 15 cm. Figures are solid resin in red, blue, green, beige and brown. Total weight is 399 g, so these are light pieces rather than dense ornaments. The listing gives the age description as kid and the use as decoration and teaching about the Christmas story.

It carries 4.1 stars from 3,015 ratings, the second largest rating count of our picks. A history that deep on an inexpensive set tells you what it is: not refined, but genuinely popular for what it does. The lower average reflects buyers expecting a display piece and receiving a robust one.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The paint is basic and the finish is not fine, so at arm's length it looks like what it is. Small figures are still small figures, so this is not for a child young enough to put pieces in their mouth. It holds the lowest average rating of our picks, and resin chips, so expect a scuffed shepherd by the third season.

Best compact nativity set: what fits a flat or a rental?

The Joseph's Studio Holy Family with Donkey is the answer when there is no surface to spare. Roman sells it as a single Holy Family group, Mary and Joseph with the infant in the manger and a donkey, in a resin and stone mix with a textured wood grain finish.

4.8(385)

A single Holy Family group with a donkey in a resin and stone mix, 26.7 cm tall on a footprint around 15 cm square. It takes about the same surface as a large candle while still reading across a room, which is the right trade in a flat or a rental with one narrow console. The textured wood grain makes it look carved rather than moulded, and at 4.8 stars it shares the second highest rating of our picks. Stock has been thin.

Listed at 26.7 cm tall with a footprint around 15 cm square, it takes about the same surface as a large candle while standing tall enough to be seen across a room. That trade is the point: in a rental where the only free surface is a narrow console, a spread-out multi-piece scene is not realistic and a tiny set disappears.

The resin and stone mix gives it weight for its size, and the wood grain texture means it reads as carved rather than moulded under lamp light. At 4.8 stars from 385 ratings it shares the second highest star rating among our picks with the Lenox set, and Joseph's Studio is a long-running Roman line, so the sculpting quality is a known quantity.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is one group, so there are no wise men, no shepherds and no rearranging, which removes most of the fun for children. Stock has been thin, so it may show as low stock when you look. The textured wood grain traps dust and wants a soft brush rather than a wipe, and a single group gives you no way to expand the scene later.

What should you look for in a nativity set?

Start with the surface, not the set. Measure the width and depth of where it will stand, then subtract the space you still want free. Most disappointment with nativity sets is a scale mistake in one direction or the other.

Piece count. Sets here run from a single Holy Family group up to about 13 pieces. Six to eight covers the Holy Family, an angel and the wise men. Nine to 13 adds shepherds, animals and sometimes a stable. More pieces means a wider arrangement, not a taller one, so a 13-piece set needs run of shelf rather than height.

Scale in centimetres. Ignore words like mini and large and read the numbers. Under about 8 cm is a shelf or cabinet set. Ten to 15 cm is a mantel set. Above 20 cm is centrepiece territory, and the set will dominate whatever it stands on.

Material. Resin is the default: it takes paint well, survives a drop onto carpet, and is the cheapest way to get a full cast. Wood suits minimal interiors and weighs least, but flat-cut figures topple easily. Porcelain gives the finest detail and shatters. Resin and stone mixes sit between the two on weight and detail.

Painted or natural. Fully painted sets look traditional and read from a distance. Natural sets, whether pale timber or wood-effect resin, look contemporary and age better, because there is no paint to date or chip off a face.

Is there a stable. Many sets are figures only. If the listing does not name a stable, creche or manger in its included components, assume there is not one. Without one the figures need a backdrop, a tray or a runner to look deliberate rather than scattered.

Outdoor use. Almost nothing sold as a tabletop set is rated for outdoors. Australian sun fades painted resin fast and summer storms finish it, so a porch or garden scene should be bought as weather resistant and treated as a separate purchase.

How do you care for and store a nativity set?

Dust the figures before you put them away, not when you take them out. Painted resin and porcelain wipe clean with a barely damp microfibre cloth; textured and wood grain finishes want a soft dry brush, because a damp cloth pushes dust deeper into the grain. Never put any of these through a dishwasher, and keep unfinished timber away from water.

Wrap each figure separately. The commonest cause of a broken set is two porcelain pieces stored touching in a box that gets moved. Acid-free tissue or plain butcher's paper is fine; newspaper transfers ink onto pale finishes over a year. Keep the original moulded inserts, because nothing you improvise fits as well.

Store the box somewhere with a stable temperature. An Australian garage roof space can pass 50 degrees in February, enough to soften glue joints on resin and warp thin timber. An interior wardrobe shelf beats a garage every time, and a labelled lidded container beats a cardboard box that gets crushed under the tree stand. Our storage box guide covers the containers that actually stack.

You'll also want these

A nativity set needs a thing or two around it to look finished, and one thing to keep it safe for the other eleven months.

The competition: what else did we consider?

The Faithful Treasure 15-Piece Nativity Figurine Set has a strong rating history and the biggest cast we found, at 15 hand-painted figures around 10 cm tall. It missed a slot because stock on the Australian listing has been intermittent. If it shows as available when you look, it is a legitimate alternative to the Kurt Adler.

The Kurt Adler Resin Nativity Figurine Set at 6.25 inches, set of eight, is the same maker as our runner-up with a larger figure scale, a deeper rating history and no stable. We chose the 11-piece version because the stable is the harder thing to source separately.

The Transpac Little Manger Scene is a 12-piece resin set in bright folk-art colours on a 10 cm by 15 cm base. It is charming and inexpensive, but the palette only works in a room already committed to colour.

Nativity set questions, answered

What is the best nativity set?

For most Australian homes the Willow Tree 6-Piece Nativity Set is the best choice. It has the highest star rating and the deepest rating history of our seven picks, the figures are large enough at 24.1 cm to work as a centrepiece, and the unpainted, wood-effect finish ages better than a fully painted set. If you want a stable included, the Kurt Adler 11-piece set is the better buy.

How many pieces should a nativity set have?

Six to eight pieces gives you the Holy Family, an angel and the three wise men, which is what most people picture. Nine to 13 pieces adds shepherds, animals and sometimes a stable. More pieces means a wider arrangement rather than a taller one, so measure the run of shelf you have before choosing a large cast.

Is resin, wood or porcelain better for a nativity set?

Resin is the best all-rounder: it takes paint well, it survives a drop onto carpet, and it is the cheapest way to get a full cast. Porcelain gives the finest detail and the most formal look but shatters rather than chips. Wood suits minimal interiors and weighs the least, though flat-cut wooden figures topple more easily than weighted resin ones.

How do you choose the right outdoor nativity set?

Buy something sold specifically as weather resistant and treat it as a separate purchase from your indoor set. Almost nothing sold as a tabletop nativity set is rated for outdoors, and Australian sun fades painted resin quickly. Look for UV-stable materials, a weighted or stakeable base, and figures at least 40 cm tall, because anything smaller disappears against a garden.

Are nativity sets safe for young children?

Chunky painted resin sets with few thin parts are the ones to hand over, and an inexpensive second set for the children is cheaper than a December of telling them not to touch. Keep porcelain and thin flat-cut timber on a higher shelf. No miniature set is suitable for a child young enough to put small pieces in their mouth.

How do you store a nativity set between Christmases?

Dust the figures before packing, wrap each one separately in acid-free tissue or plain paper rather than newspaper, and keep the original moulded inserts if the box had them. Store the container on an interior wardrobe shelf rather than in a garage roof space, where summer heat can soften glue joints on resin figures and warp thin timber.

What else should you sort before Christmas?

A nativity set is one surface. These guides cover the rest of the season, and the boxes that hold it all in January.

10 Piece White Porcelain Miniature Nativity Figurine Set Beautiful Christmas Decor

Mini Christmas Nativity Set - 9 Piece Set Includes Manger and 8 Figurines - Kids Decoration - Resin Material, 5" x 6" Manger 2" Figures

Joseph's Studio by Roman - Holy Family Figure with Donkey, Nativity Set, Christmas Scene, Wood Grain Look, 10.5" H, Resin and Stone, Tabletop or Desk Display, Decorative
