Which inflatable pool actually survives an Australian summer?

When the mercury climbs past 35 and the local swimming spot is packed, an inflatable pool in the backyard is one of the cheapest ways to cool the kids down. The catch is that most of them look identical online, the sizes are quoted in confusing mixes of centimetres and litres, and the difference between a pool that lasts three summers and one that splits at the seam by January is not obvious from the photos. We researched the inflatable and paddling pools stocked on Amazon Australia, cross-checked their star ratings and review counts, and pulled out six that earn their space in the shed. Every pick below is a genuine inflatable or paddling pool for kids and families, not a steel-framed above-ground pool and not a pool float.

One thing to say up front, because it matters more than any spec: an inflatable pool is not a safety device and it is not a flotation aid. Young children can get into trouble in the few centimetres of water these pools hold, so an adult needs to be within arm's reach the whole time the pool has water in it, and the pool should be emptied and stored on its side when the fun is over. Water rules for home pools vary by state and territory, so check what applies where you live before you fill anything up.

The short answer: our top inflatable pool picks

If you want the quick version, the Intex Snorkel Fun Swim Center is the all-rounder we would put in most backyards, with room for a few kids and walls soft enough to lean on. The Bestway Rectangular Water Pool is the value choice when you want a bigger footprint without paying more, and the Intex Rectangular Baby Pool is the cheap, tiny, ultra-light option for babies, balconies and a first splash. The other three picks cover a roomy oval family pool, a spray pool that keeps toddlers busy, and a soft baby pool for the under-threes.

How our inflatable pool picks compare at a glance

The table below lines up all six pools by who they suit, their inflated footprint, and the current from-price on Amazon Australia. Prices move daily through summer, so treat the from-price as a guide and let the live listing confirm the number before you buy.

How we chose these inflatable pools

We are an editorial team, not a lab, so we lean on the weight of real buyer feedback rather than staged testing. Here is what shaped the shortlist.

  • Real Amazon Australia ratings and review counts, checked live, with anything under three reviews or with a price that looked like a reseller markup left off the list.
  • Genuine inflatable or paddling pools only, so no steel-frame above-ground pools, no non-inflatable foldable tubs and no pool floats sneaking in.
  • A spread of sizes and prices, from a $24.99 baby pool to a family lounge pool, so there is a sensible pick whether you have a balcony or a big lawn.
  • Practical durability signals from owners: how well the seams and valves hold air, whether a repair patch is included, and how the vinyl copes with a full Australian summer.

The family fun pool most backyards want: Intex Snorkel Fun Swim Center

The Intex Snorkel Fun Swim Center is the pool we would reach for first if the brief is simply cool the kids down without taking over the whole yard. At 262 by 160 centimetres with 46 centimetre walls, it holds enough water for three kids to splash properly, and the soft inflatable sides are comfortable to sit against, which is more than you can say for a steel-rimmed pool. It carries a 4.4 star rating, the highest of our three headline picks, across more than 4,400 reviews, so the fun-per-dollar is well established.

Setup is about as easy as inflatable pools get. Two air chambers, each with a combo valve, mean you can inflate the walls quickly with an electric pump and top them off by hand if they soften over a few days. A drain plug at the base makes emptying and moving it painless, and Intex includes a repair patch in the box for the inevitable stray twig or driveway pebble. It is a leisure and play pool rather than a lap pool, so nobody is doing freestyle in it, but for backyard afternoons and birthday parties it is hard to beat at this price. It is also the priciest pick on this list, which is worth noting given how small the gap is to some cheaper family options.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The single drain point is a little slow, and a few owners found the vinyl around the plug can tear if you drag the pool while it is still part-full, so lift rather than haul. There is no pump in the box, so budget for one. And at 262 centimetres it needs a reasonably flat, clear patch of lawn or paving to sit properly, which is not a given on a small courtyard.

The best value family inflatable pool: Bestway Rectangular Water Pool

If the Snorkel Fun pool is the crowd-pleaser, the Bestway Rectangular Water Pool is the value play. It is actually a touch larger at 262 by 175 centimetres, holds a generous 778 litres, seats four, and typically lands below the Intex on price. With a 4.2 star rating across nearly 7,900 reviews it is one of the most reviewed pools in the whole category, and Australian owners repeatedly describe it as a summer hit that kept the kids busy for hours.

Construction is the familiar two-ring inflatable design with wide, safe side walls and two interlocking quick-release valves, so it inflates fast and packs down small for storage. A simple drain valve handles emptying, and a repair patch is included. It is rated for ages six and up, which reflects the deeper water rather than any hard rule, and it is a better fit for a family with primary-school kids than for toddlers. For the money, the amount of pool you get here is the standout on this list, and if you are choosing between this and the Intex purely on size and dollars, this one wins.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The usual inflatable caveats apply. A minority of owners had a pool that slowly lost air or leaked, which is almost always a valve not fully seated or an unseen puncture, so inflate it fully a day before you need it and check for softening. There is no pump included, the walls need a top-up every few days, and like every pool here the water needs changing or treating to stay clear in the heat.

The budget paddling pool for babies and toddlers: Intex Rectangular Baby Pool

The Intex Rectangular Baby Pool is the one to buy when you want a cheap, cheerful splash for a baby or a small toddler and nothing more. At 166 by 100 centimetres with 25 centimetre walls it is deliberately tiny, weighs just 1.7 kilograms, and inflates in a couple of minutes. It is both the cheapest pick here and, with more than 19,000 reviews, the most reviewed pool on this entire list, which tells you how many Australian families reach for it as a first pool.

What makes it clever is the soft inflatable floor, which is kinder on a baby's knees and means you can set it up on a balcony, a terrace or hard paving without worrying about a hard base. It rolls up to almost nothing for storage, so it is easy to bring to the grandparents' place or tuck behind the shelf over winter. Because it is so shallow it is also the easiest pool here to empty and refresh, which matters when you are changing the water often for a little one. Do not expect it to entertain older kids for long, though. This is a paddling pool in the truest sense.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

There is no drain plug on this model, so you tip it out by hand, which is easy given the size. A few owners found the walls soften within a few hours and need re-inflating, so give it a firm pump and check the valves are pushed fully closed. And it genuinely is small, so if you have a three-year-old with energy to burn, size up to one of the family pools.

The roomy oval family pool: Bestway Big Lagoon

The Bestway Big Lagoon Family Pool is the pick for families who want a slightly different shape and a lot of room for the price. Its 262 by 157 centimetre oval holds 544 litres, the extra-wide side walls are two equal rings that feel reassuringly solid, and Bestway rates it for up to six occupants, though realistically that means a few kids plus a supervising adult perched on the edge. It sits at a 4.3 star rating across nearly 600 reviews.

The oval footprint is genuinely useful. It gives kids a bit of length to move around in without the sharp corners of a rectangle, and the wide walls double as a spot for a parent to sit and keep watch, which is exactly where you want to be. Setup is the standard quick-inflate, fill and drain-valve routine, and Bestway includes a heavy-duty repair patch. It packs away foldable and light for a pool this size. If the Intex and the rectangular Bestway are both a little too boxy for your yard, this is the one that feels a touch more relaxed to lounge in.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The floor is not inflated, so on rough ground you will want a mat or a groundsheet underneath to protect it and add a little padding. As with the others there is no pump in the box, and the water needs regular changing or a small dose of pool chemicals to stay clear through a hot week.

The spray pool that keeps toddlers busy: Intex Whale Spray Pool

The Intex Whale Spray Pool solves a very specific problem: toddlers who lose interest in still water after ten minutes. You attach a garden hose to the whale's tail and it sends a gentle arc of water over the pool, which turns a plain splash into a sprinkler game. It measures about 201 by 196 centimetres with a raised whale surround, holds around 200 litres, and holds a 4.3 star rating across more than 800 reviews.

It is rated for ages two and up and is squarely aimed at little kids rather than a family cool-off, but for that job it is excellent value. The spray runs off mains water pressure so there is nothing to charge or plug in, and the raised sides make it feel more like a play centre than a bare paddling pool. Owners across several countries call out that it is bigger than they expected and that the spray feature is the part their kids love most. It inflates and deflates quickly and tips out through a drain hole when you are done.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Running the hose to keep the spray going uses water, so it suits a quick session rather than an all-afternoon soak, and you will want to be mindful during water restrictions. A couple of buyers received a pool that had clearly been returned and repacked, so check yours is complete and unused on arrival. As always, no pump is included.

The soft baby pool for the under-threes: AirSwim Inflatable Baby Pool

The AirSwim Inflatable Baby Pool is the gentlest option here and, at 4.5 stars, the highest-rated of our six picks. It is a small round pool, about 90 centimetres across and 25 centimetres deep, made from soft BPA-free PVC and designed for babies and toddlers from zero to three. It doubles neatly as an indoor ball pit in the cooler months, which stretches its value well beyond summer.

The appeal is simplicity and softness. It inflates in five or six minutes, the walls are cushioned enough that a wobbly one-year-old can lean on them safely under supervision, and it is light enough to move indoors or out on a whim. Parents describe children who are nervous of the bath happily climbing into this, which says a lot about how unintimidating it feels. There is a drain hole for emptying, and it stores away to almost nothing. For a first pool for a baby, or a shaded corner splash on a scorching day, it is a lovely little thing. It has the fewest reviews of our six picks, simply because it is a newer listing, but the ones it has are strong.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is genuinely small and shallow, so a toddler will outgrow it within a season or two. The novelty shape means the usable space is a little less than the diameter suggests. And with a young baby in even shallow water, constant hands-on supervision is not optional, it is the whole deal.

What to look for in an inflatable pool

Once you have picked a size, a few features separate a good buy from a frustrating one. Here is what actually matters.

Kids paddling pool or family pool. A paddling pool like the Intex Rectangular Baby or the AirSwim is shallow, light and cheap, and it is perfect for babies and small toddlers or tight spaces. A family pool like the Snorkel Fun or the two Bestways holds far more water and suits older kids and shared splashing, but needs more room and a bit more effort to fill and empty. Buy for the age of your youngest regular swimmer.

Ring pool versus framed-inflatable. The pools here are ring pools, where inflated rings form the walls and the water pressure holds everything up. They are soft, forgiving and quick to set up. A framed-inflatable pool adds a rigid frame for extra height and volume and edges toward proper above-ground territory. If you want something taller and more permanent, that is a different category, and our above-ground pool guide covers it.

Depth and capacity. Wall height is not water depth. A 46 centimetre wall might only hold 30 centimetres of water once you account for the rings. Check the quoted litres and the occupancy, and remember that more water means more weight, a longer fill and a bigger job to empty.

Pump included, or not. Almost none of these pools include a pump, and inflating a family pool by mouth is a genuine chore. Budget for an electric or a good hand pump, which we cover in the accessories below. A dual-action pump that both inflates and deflates will save you time at pack-up too.

Repair patch. A stray pebble or an enthusiastic dog claw will eventually find your pool. Most of our picks include a repair patch, which turns a puncture from a bin job into a five-minute fix. If yours does not include one, a cheap vinyl repair kit is worth having on the shelf. For the days when the pool is packed away, a misting fan is a surprisingly effective backup for cooling a patio.

How do you keep an inflatable pool clean and lasting?

A little care goes a long way with vinyl pools. First, set the pool up on a clear, flat surface, ideally over a groundsheet or a mat, so nothing sharp is pressing on the floor. Rinse it before the first fill and check the valves are pushed fully closed, since a soft-feeling pool is usually a valve issue rather than a leak.

For the water itself, small paddling pools are easiest to simply empty and refresh between uses, especially for babies. For larger family pools that you want to keep filled for a few days, a small dose of pool chemicals and a quick skim keeps the water clear in the heat, though you should still change it regularly and always follow the product directions. Be mindful of any local water restrictions when you are deciding how often to refill.

When summer is done, deflate the pool fully, dry it completely to stop mould, dust it lightly and roll it loosely for storage somewhere out of direct sun. And the point that never changes: never leave a pool filled and unattended, empty it and stand it on its side when playtime ends, and keep young children within arm's reach whenever there is water in it. Check your state or territory's rules on home pools and water safety, as they differ around the country.

You'll also want a pump and a few extras

Since almost no inflatable pool ships with a pump, a couple of accessories make the whole experience far less painful. These are the extras worth having ready before the first hot weekend.

What else we considered

A few popular pools did not make the list, and it is worth saying why. The Intex Easy Set and other round pools with a filter pump are excellent, but they are above-ground pools rather than inflatables in the paddling sense, so they belong in a different guide. Non-inflatable foldable pools, the rigid-walled tubs that pop up in search results, are a genuinely different product and out of scope here. We also skipped several listings whose prices were roughly double the going rate for the same pool, which is a classic sign of a third-party reseller markup rather than a better product. And the various water hammocks and inflatable trampolines that turn up under pool searches are floats and toys, not pools. For those, our pool float guide and pool toys guide are the right places to look.

Inflatable pool questions, answered

What is the best inflatable pool in Australia?

For most families the Intex Snorkel Fun Swim Center is the best all-round inflatable pool, with room for a few kids, soft walls that are comfortable to lean on, and a strong 4.4 star rating. If you want more space for less money, the Bestway Rectangular Water Pool is the better value, and for babies or small spaces the Intex Rectangular Baby Pool is the cheap, light choice.

Is Intex or Bestway better for an inflatable pool?

Both are reputable and the difference is smaller than brand loyalty suggests. Intex tends to have the wider range and the play-focused designs like spray pools, while Bestway often gives you a slightly larger pool for the price. On this list the Intex pools rate a fraction higher on average, but the Bestway Rectangular Water Pool is the best value of the lot, so choose on the specific pool rather than the badge.

Are inflatable pools worth it?

For a few hundred dollars less than a framed above-ground pool, an inflatable pool gives kids somewhere to cool off through summer and packs away completely when the season ends. As long as you accept that they need topping up with air, regular water changes and constant supervision, they are one of the best-value ways to beat the heat in a backyard or on a balcony.

Do inflatable pools need a pump?

Almost always, yes. Very few inflatable pools include a pump, and inflating a family-size pool by mouth is impractical. A cheap dual-action hand pump or a cordless electric pump will inflate the walls in a couple of minutes and deflate them again at pack-up, so factor one into your budget before you buy the pool.

How long does an inflatable pool last?

With reasonable care, a good inflatable pool lasts several summers. The things that shorten its life are sharp ground, dragging it while it is full of water, storing it damp or in direct sun, and leaving it under-inflated so the seams flex. Set it on a mat, empty and dry it between long breaks, and keep the included repair patch handy for the odd puncture.
