A pool float looks trivial until you have bought three bad ones. The first goes soft overnight. The second cooks your back because the vinyl sits flat on the water and heats like a car bonnet. The third is fine but so big it fills half a plunge pool. For a first-home buyer who inherited a pool with the house, that is a lot of money spent learning one lesson.

This guide covers adult lounging only: loungers, lie-on tanning floats, floating hammocks, ride-on style rafts and group islands. It leaves out dive sticks, water guns and pool games, because kids pool toys are a different buying job. We looked at what is stocked on Amazon Australia in August 2026, checked live prices, star ratings and review counts, and read what Australian owners said after a full summer.

One thing first, because it outranks every spec below. A pool float is not a flotation device and it is not a swim aid. Nothing here is rated as safety equipment, nothing here will keep a weak swimmer up, and nothing here replaces supervision. Anyone who cannot swim confidently needs an adult watching them, every minute, float or no float.

What is the best pool float in Australia right now?

For most Australian backyard pools, the Aqua Leisure Campania Ultimate 2-in-1 Pool Float Lounge is the one to buy. It has a soft mesh seat that keeps you cool instead of frying you, a backrest that flips between sitting upright and lying flat, and a clip-on caddy so your drink is not balanced on your chest. It is rated 4.4 out of 5 from 2,816 ratings and starts from $98.83.

If you mostly want to lie flat in the sun with room to share, the Sloosh Inflatable Tanning Pool Lounger is the better shape and starts from $59.99. If you want to spend as little as possible and still get something durable, the SwimWays Spring Float Papasan starts from $31.21 and is the cheapest of our eight picks.

Five more picks cover specific jobs: shade if you burn easily, a hammock for a small pool, a four-seat island, a foam saddle that never needs inflating, and a fabric-topped lounger for reading.

How do these eight pool floats compare?

Prices below are from-prices captured during research in August 2026 and they move heading into summer. Ratings and review counts are parent listing figures, covering every colour and size.

Two picks tie on price: the Sloosh Tanning Pool Lounger and the Jasonwell Floating Island XL both start from $59.99, one a two-person lie-on and the other seating four. Two tie at the top of the rating range: the SwimWays Spring Float Papasan and the Aqua Leisure Monterey Hammock both sit at 4.5 out of 5.

How did we choose these pool floats?

NestPath does not run a pool lab and does not pretend to. We aggregate: we pull live listing data from Amazon Australia, cross-check it against the wider Australian retail market, and read the review body for failure patterns that repeat. Nothing here is a hands-on verdict dressed up as research.

Every pick cleared four gates. It had to be genuinely available in Australia at an Australian price. It had to carry a real star rating from a meaningful number of buyers, and we treated thousands of reviews as stronger evidence than a perfect score from six people. Its price had to be sane, so anything at more than double a comparable float was dropped as a reseller artefact. And it had to be an adult lounging product.

We also checked what Australians see when they search. The top results are almost entirely retailer category pages: fine for browsing, useless if you want to know which float holds air. That gap is what this guide fills.

Best pool float overall: which one suits the most people?

The Aqua Leisure Campania Ultimate 2-in-1 Pool Float Lounge is the pick if you want one float covering most of what you actually do in a pool. It solves the two problems that ruin cheap loungers: it does not cook you, and it does not lock you into one position.

Aqua Campania Ultimate 2-in-1 Pool Float Lounge – Extra Large – Inflatable Pool Floats for Adults with Adjustable Backrest & Cupholder Caddy – Teal Hibiscus

4.4(2,816)

It is the one float here that covers most of what you actually do in a pool. The Coolweave mesh keeps your body in contact with the water instead of baking on top of it, the backrest flips between sitting upright for conversation and lying flat for sun, and the detachable caddy holds a drink genuinely upright. Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 2,816 ratings, with a wire-free build that folds into a cupboard rather than taking over the shed.

The seat and leg rest are a soft mesh Aqua Leisure calls Coolweave, stretched over a wire-free frame. Because the mesh sits at the water line rather than above it, your body stays in contact with the water and you do not overheat the way you do on a solid vinyl raft. The backrest has two positions: upright, so your shoulders clear the water, or folded flat into a tanning platform.

The caddy is the detail reviewers mention most. It clips to the side, holds a drink genuinely upright rather than at the tilt most float holders manage, and detaches as a drinks tray.

The listing puts the inflated size at 142 by 91 cm and the capacity at 113 kg, which is 250 lb. A DuoLock valve makes inflation quick, and with no wire frame it folds small enough for a cupboard. It is rated 4.4 out of 5 across 2,816 ratings, tying the Jasonwell island but with far more reviews behind it. Prices start from $98.83, only worth it if the pool gets used.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is sized for average and shorter adults, and reviewers over about 175 cm report calves hanging past the leg rest. The fabric top dries slower than bare vinyl, so stand it on edge rather than folding it away damp. It also sits you higher out of the water than a hammock float: lovely in November, cold in February.

Best pool float for tanning: what if you just want to lie flat?

The Sloosh Inflatable Tanning Pool Lounger is the flat-out sunbaking float: no backrest, no seat, just a very large padded rectangle with a headrest at one end. It is the shape most people picture when they think of a pool float.

4.3(7,102)

If you only want to lie flat in the sun, this is the right shape and the right size. At 178 by 117 cm it is the largest lie-on surface of any of our single or two-person picks, the ribbed air-cushion base stops it feeling like a plastic sheet, and the wrap-around grab rope means it stays where you tether it. Rated 4.3 out of 5 from 7,102 ratings, the second-largest review base in this guide.

At 178 by 117 cm it is the largest lie-on surface of any of our single or two-person picks, and Sloosh lists the occupancy as two: one adult with room to sprawl, or two who like each other. The base is a ribbed air cushion rather than one flat chamber, so it does not feel like lying on a plastic sheet, and the removable headrest clips into a slot.

The PVC is listed at 0.3 mm thick and UV resistant, at the heavier end for this style. Two drink holders are moulded in, and a wrap-around grab rope runs through pad eyes so you can tether it to the pool edge instead of chasing it down the shallow end every time the breeze picks up.

Australian buyers keep mentioning a second use: fill the recessed centre with a few centimetres of water, leave it on the lawn, and it becomes a shallow suntan tub for a backyard with no pool. It is rated 4.3 out of 5 from 7,102 ratings, the second-largest review base here, and prices start from $59.99.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The recurring Australian complaint is valve quality: several local reviews report the valve arriving damaged or leaking, which is a return rather than a repair because the fault sits in the housing. Check it before the box goes in the bin. It is bare PVC with no fabric top, so the surface gets hot before you get in, and it takes ten to fifteen minutes with a pump.

Best budget pool float: what is worth buying under $35?

The SwimWays Spring Float Papasan is the cheapest of our eight picks, starting from $31.21, and it is what we would buy if the budget was tight and the pool was small. It is also the only pick here with a spring in it.

SwimWays Spring Float Premium Papasan Pool Lounger for Swimming Pool, Inflatable Pool Floats Adult with Fast Inflation for Ages 15 & Up

4.5(891)

The cheapest of our eight picks and still a properly engineered float. The inner spring gives it structure without being pumped rock hard, the mesh seat drops you below the surface so you actually cool down, and the whole thing twists into three flat circles and a carry bag. Rated 4.5 out of 5 from 891 ratings, tying the Aqua Leisure Monterey Hammock among the inflatables here. The sensible buy for a first pool or a rental.

SwimWays builds a coiled inner spring into the outer ring. That gives structure without needing to be pumped rock hard, and it lets the whole thing twist down into three flat circles that fit the included carry bag. If storage space is why you have avoided buying a float, this answers it.

The seat is a soft mesh that drops your body just below the surface. You will get wet, and that is the point: on a 38 degree afternoon a mesh float beats lying on vinyl. Inflated it measures 89 by 89 cm and the listing rates it to 113 kg. The Hyper-Flate valve does not let air escape between breaths, so you can inflate it by mouth with no pump.

It is rated 4.5 out of 5 from 891 ratings, tying the Aqua Leisure Monterey Hammock among the inflatables here. For a first pool, a rental or a holiday house where floats get abused and lost, this is the sensible buy.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You sit in it rather than on it, so it is no use for tanning your back or staying dry, and there is no cup holder. At 89 cm across there is nowhere to stretch out, so tall adults end up knees-up. The mesh eventually stretches and sags, usually several seasons away.

Best pool float with shade: what if you burn in ten minutes?

The COOLCOOLDEE Pool Lounge Float with Canopy is for anyone who cannot sit in Australian sun for long. It is the priciest of our eight picks, starting from $103.32, and the canopy is the entire reason it costs that.

4.3(1,048)

The pick for anyone who cannot sit in Australian sun for long. The removable double-layer canopy is rated UPF50+ with mesh side panels so air moves through, and underneath it has separate backrest, leg rest and footrest sections plus a combined drink and phone holder. At 140 by 110 cm and a listed 136 kg it carries the highest single-person weight rating we picked. Rated 4.3 out of 5 from 1,048 ratings, and the priciest of our eight picks.

The shade is double-layer fabric rated UPF50+ with mesh panels on both sides, so air moves through instead of turning the space underneath into a greenhouse. It pulls up over your head or folds flat behind you, and it is removable, so on a mild day you have a normal lounger.

Underneath, the geometry is better resolved than most: separate backrest, leg rest and footrest sections rather than one flat chamber, so your knees are not locked straight. A built-in holder takes both a drink and a phone. Inflated it measures 140 by 110 cm and the listing rates it to 136 kg, which is 300 lb and the highest single-person weight rating we picked.

It is rated 4.3 out of 5 from 1,048 ratings, tying the Sloosh Tanning Pool Lounger. Reviewers single out reading in the pool, because you can see a page without squinting into glare. If your skin reacts badly to sun, this float lets you swim at midday rather than waiting until four.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A canopy is a sail. In more than a light breeze the float travels, so on a windy day fold it down or tether it. There are more chambers to inflate than on a simple raft, so setup takes longer. And it is the most expensive thing here, which is a lot for something that ultimately holds air.

Best floating hammock: what fits in a small backyard pool?

The Aqua Leisure Original 4-in-1 Monterey Hammock is the pick for plunge pools, courtyard pools and anywhere a full-length lounger simply will not fit. It is also the most-reviewed product in this guide by a wide margin, at 12,193 ratings.

4.5(12,193)

The most-reviewed product in this guide at 12,193 ratings, and the right answer for a plunge pool or courtyard pool. Two inflated tubes and a mesh sling give you a chair, a hammock, a drifter and an exercise saddle in one 112 by 66 cm float, and the patented non-stick PVC is listed as 50 to 70 per cent thicker than typical hammock floats. The seat sits in the water, so getting on needs no climbing or flopping.

The design is two inflated tubes joined by a mesh sling. Basic, but one product does four jobs: a chair with your head and shoulders out, a hammock to lie back through, a drifter to drape over, or a saddle for water walking.

Aqua Leisure uses a patented non-stick PVC the listing describes as 50 to 70 per cent thicker than typical hammock floats, and the difference shows in reviews from people who bought a cheap version first: thin ones stick to wet skin and tear where the mesh meets the tube. It measures 112 by 66 cm inflated and is rated to 113 kg.

Because the seat sits in the water rather than above it, getting on is easy: no climbing, no flopping, no ladder. The listing calls this out as suiting older swimmers and pregnant women. It is rated 4.5 out of 5, tying the SwimWays Spring Float Papasan, and prices start from $33.08.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You will be wet from the chest down, always. It is not a tanning float and never will be. The listing suggests it suits people roughly 122 to 183 cm tall, so very tall adults sit awkwardly, and there is no cup holder. One Australian reviewer also noted the yellow colourway attracts bees, which is worth knowing before you choose a colour.

Best group pool float: what works for four adults at once?

The Jasonwell Floating Island XL is the party float: four seats, four backrests, four cup holders, and an open centre so everyone dangles their legs in the water instead of baking on top of it. Prices start from $59.99, tying the Sloosh Tanning Pool Lounger.

4.4(130)

The party float, with four seats, four individual backrests and a cup holder each, plus an open centre so everyone can dangle their legs. Individual backrests are what make it usable for a whole afternoon rather than ten minutes propped on elbows. Heavy raft-grade vinyl with reinforced seat seams, rated to 227 kg, and four grab handles for towing or tethering. Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 130 ratings, the smallest review base here.

The backrests separate this from the giant novelty rafts. Most multi-person floats are a flat mat with nothing behind you, so within ten minutes everyone is propped on their elbows. Australian reviewers describe this one becoming the default afternoon spot for weeks.

It is heavy raft-grade vinyl with reinforced seams on the seat chambers, rated to 227 kg, which is 500 lb. Four grab handles run around the perimeter, so you can tow it, tie it to a pontoon or dam edge, or stop it spinning in the breeze.

It is rated 4.4 out of 5 from 130 ratings, tying the Aqua Leisure Campania. That review base is the smallest of our eight picks because the listing is newer, so treat it with more caution than the ones in the thousands. On a standard 8 by 4 metre pool it takes roughly a third of the surface.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It needs an electric pump. Australian reviewers who tried a foot pump gave up; with an electric pump it is about fifteen minutes. The cup holders take cans and stubbies but taller tumblers tip. It packs into a large tub rather than onto a shelf. And 130 ratings is less durability evidence than we would like.

Best pool float with no inflating: what if you swim every day?

The Texas Recreation Super Soft Deluxe Saddle suits people who are in and out of the pool constantly and do not want a daily inflation ritual. It is solid foam: no valve, no pump, nothing to puncture. It is also the highest-rated product in this guide, at 4.7 out of 5.

4.7(308)

The highest-rated product in this guide at 4.7 out of 5, and the pick for anyone who swims most days and hates maintenance. It is a 91 by 46 cm slab of vinyl-coated closed-cell foam with no valve, no pump and nothing to puncture. You sit astride it with head and shoulders clear of the water, it dries in minutes, and at 1.36 kg it hooks over a fence and gets forgotten about until tomorrow.

The shape is a saddle, a 91 by 46 cm slab of vinyl-coated closed-cell foam you sit astride, so head, shoulders and arms stay clear of the water while your legs hang either side. It is the float you want for standing around in the deep end talking, which is what a lot of pool time actually is.

Foam behaves differently to inflatables across a season. It cannot go soft overnight and it cannot be punctured by a dog, a sharp tile edge or a kid with a pool toy. It dries in minutes and can be hosed and left out. Closed-cell foam does not absorb water, so it never gets heavy.

At 1.36 kg it is light enough to hook over a fence and forget. It is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 308 ratings and prices start from $47.71. Buy this if you have watched inflatables die in your pool and are tired of it.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You are half submerged and upright, so it is not a lounger and not a tanning float. It cannot be deflated, so it takes the same storage space in winter as in January. Vinyl-coated foam eventually chalks and fades under years of Australian UV. And 308 ratings, while healthy, is a smaller sample than our top picks carry.

Best fabric-topped lounger: what if you want to sit up and read?

4.0(470)

A fabric-topped lounger for the specific case of sitting upright with a book, then flipping flat for sun. The fabric surface does not scorch, stick to wet skin or squeak, and the adjustable backrest gives real shoulder support. It measures 147 by 85 cm and is listed to 113 kg. It is rated 4.0 out of 5 from 470 ratings, the lowest of the eight picks here, largely because fabric tops attract mildew complaints when they are put away damp.

The top surface is fabric-covered rather than bare PVC, which is the main reason to choose it over the cheaper Sloosh tanning lounger. Fabric does not get scorching in direct sun, stick to wet skin, or squeak when you shift your weight. If you have ever climbed off a vinyl float with a grid printed into your back, this is the fix.

The backrest adjusts, converting it from a recliner with support behind your shoulders into a flat tanning platform. Inflated it measures 147 by 85 cm and the listing rates it to 113 kg. There is a drink holder and it weighs 1.76 kg.

It is rated 4.0 out of 5 from 470 ratings, the lowest of the eight picks here, and that is the honest reason it sits last. Fabric-topped floats attract complaints about mildew when put away damp. Owners who dry it properly are generally happy, and the read-a-book-sitting-up case is under-served.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The 4.0 rating is the lowest here and it is not an accident. The fabric holds water, so it has to be stood on edge and dried before storage or it will smell. It sits lower in the water than the Aqua Leisure Campania. And it starts above the larger Sloosh tanning lounger, so you pay more for less surface area.

What should you look for in a pool float?

Start with your pool, not the float. Measure it. A 178 cm lounger in a 3 metre plunge pool means permanently touching both walls. As a rough rule, a single float should be no more than about a third of the length of your pool's shortest side.

Then decide whether you want to be wet or dry, the biggest split in the category and the one most get wrong. Mesh-seated floats such as hammocks and spring floats drop you into the water and keep you cool, which is what you want in a Brisbane February. Solid lie-on floats keep you dry, which is what you want for tanning.

Material and thickness

PVC thickness predicts how long an inflatable survives, and at or above 0.3 mm is the sturdier end. Thin PVC sticks to skin, splits along seams and does not survive being dragged across coping. Fabric-covered floats are cooler to the touch but need drying properly. Closed-cell foam sidesteps the question, at the cost of bulk.

Valve type and inflation time

A cheap pinch valve is the reason floats die. Modern designs use wide-bore valves with a non-return flap so air does not escape between breaths. SwimWays calls theirs Hyper-Flate, Aqua Leisure calls theirs DuoLock, and both do the same job. For anything larger than a hammock, budget for a rechargeable pump; a foot pump on a two-metre island is a miserable twenty minutes.

Weight rating and length

Listed capacities here run from 113 kg on single-person floats to 227 kg on the four-seat island. Treat these as the point where the float stops working properly, and size up if you are close. Check length against your height too: much of this category is designed around roughly 165 to 175 cm.

Extras that actually matter

Cup holders only count if they hold a drink upright, which many do not. Grab ropes and pad eyes let you tether a float so it stays where you left it. Carry bags are the difference between a float that gets used and one crumpled behind the shed.

How do you make a pool float last more than one summer?

Rinse it with fresh water after every use. Chlorine and salt both degrade PVC and both concentrate as water evaporates off the surface, so a float left wet in the sun soaks in a stronger solution than the pool. Thirty seconds with a hose does most of the work, and it keeps grit out of the water that the pool cleaner has to chase.

Dry it before it goes away. This is the whole game for fabric-topped floats. Stand it on its edge in shade until the seams are dry, because water pools inside the fabric channel and mildew starts there. Put a damp float in a tub in March and it will smell in November.

Store it out of direct sun, because UV kills vinyl, not water. A float left inflated on the lawn all summer will chalk, fade and crack along the fold lines. Deflate it, fold it loosely, and keep it in a shaded tub.

Do not over-inflate. Air expands as it heats, so a float pumped hard in morning shade is under real pressure by mid-afternoon. Fill chambers until firm but still yielding to a press. Most seam failures in reviews are heat expansion, not manufacturing faults.

Keep sunscreen and repellent off the surface where you can, because oil-based products break down vinyl coatings and stain fabric permanently. And patch small leaks early, before a slow leak becomes a split. Vinyl patches cost a few dollars and take five minutes. Every inflatable here is repairable except at the valve housing, which is a return.

What else do you need for a pool float setup?

Six things separate a float you use from one that annoys you. All are on Amazon Australia.

What did we look at and not pick?

Plenty of good floats sold in Australia are not on this list, and a few Amazon listings looked promising until we checked them.

Sunnylife dominates the Australian search results and deservedly so on looks. Their luxe lie-on loungers and ride-on designs are stocked through department stores rather than Amazon, and they sit well above our top pick on price. Floating bean bags from specialists such as Bean Bags R Us are the other strong non-Amazon option: non-inflatable, UV-treated olefin, no valve to fail, priced into the low hundreds. Excellent if you want something that lives by the pool permanently, poor on packability.

Clark Rubber, Anaconda and Kmart's Anko range all carry cheaper inflatable lounges. None are bad. They are just harder to compare on transparent rating and review data, which is what this format runs on.

On Amazon we dropped several candidates. A motorised joystick-steered float had no rating history at all. A large tanning tub with 571 ratings looked strong until we found it categorised under baby pool floats with an inconsistent ASIN in the listing detail. A three-pack of water hammocks rated 4.5 was dropped because the listing classifies it as a buoyancy aid, and we do not recommend anything sold with a flotation-safety framing.

Pool float questions Australians actually ask

Are pool floats safe for children to use?

No pool float in this guide is a safety device. They are not flotation devices, they are not swim aids, and they will not keep a child up if they slip off. Every product here is rated for adults or for ages fifteen and up. Children in or near a pool need constant adult supervision regardless of what they float on, and a float can make that harder because it moves and blocks your line of sight.

How long does a pool float last in the Australian sun?

A well-made PVC float that is rinsed, dried and stored out of the sun usually lasts several summers. The same float left inflated on the lawn all season typically chalks and splits within one. UV is the main killer, not water or chlorine. PVC at or above 0.3 mm holds up noticeably better than thin material.

Do pool floats damage pool liners or filters?

Floats themselves do not damage liners, but the grit they drag in can. Pulling a float across pavers and dropping it in the pool brings sand and stones with it, and the pump then pushes that around. Rinse floats before they go in and skim after a session. Dye transfer from brightly coloured vinyl is possible on cheap floats but rare on thicker material.

What is the best pool float for a small backyard pool?

A hammock-style float. The Aqua Leisure Original 4-in-1 Monterey Hammock measures 112 by 66 cm inflated, so it uses a fraction of the surface a full lounger does, and it works in water too shallow for a lie-on raft. The SwimWays Spring Float Papasan is similarly compact at 89 by 89 cm. Both let you turn and reposition without hitting the walls.

How do you stop a pool float going flat overnight?

Most overnight softening is not a leak. Air contracts as it cools, so a float inflated at 35 degrees in the afternoon reads soft at 6am and firms up by mid-morning. Genuine leaks are usually at the valve or along a seam. Inflate, submerge sections and watch for a bubble stream, then dry the area and apply a vinyl patch. Valve-housing faults cannot be patched reliably.

What else should you sort out around the pool?

A float is one small part of making a pool pleasant to own. If you just moved into a house with a pool, these cover the rest.

TRC Recreation Adult/Child Super Soft Foam Deluxe Saddle Swimming Pool Lake Seat Chair Lounger Float, Red

Sloosh Pool Floats Lounger Adult, Fabric Pool Floaties Lounge Convertible 2-in-1 Floating Water Floaty with Cup Holders Adjustable Backrest Recliner for Party in Summer (Pink)
