Moving Day Essentials — What to Pack in Your First-Night Box

By ·1 April 2026·7 min read

It's 9pm. You've been moving all day. Every muscle aches. The house is a maze of boxes — 30, 40, maybe 50 of them, stacked in every room with cryptic labels like "kitchen stuff" and "misc bedroom." All you want is to brush your teeth, charge your phone, put sheets on the bed, and collapse. But your toothbrush is in one of those 50 boxes. Your sheets are in another. Your phone charger is in a third. And you have no idea which ones.

This is the most common moving day disaster — and it's entirely preventable. The solution is a first-night box (or bag, or suitcase) that contains everything you need for the first 24 hours, packed last and unpacked first. It stays with you — in your car, not on the truck — so it's always accessible.

Here's exactly what goes in it.

The First-Night Box Concept

Your first-night box is a clearly labelled box or suitcase that contains everything two people need to survive their first night and morning in a new home without opening any other box. It's the last thing you pack at the old place and the first thing you open at the new place.

Key rules:

  • It goes in YOUR car, not the moving truck
  • It's clearly labelled (we wrote "OPEN FIRST" in red marker on all four sides)
  • Everything in it is essential — if you can wait until tomorrow, it doesn't go in the box
  • Pack it the night before moving day so it's ready to go

Toiletries and Personal Care

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shower essentials: Shampoo, conditioner, body wash (travel sizes save space)
  • Deodorant
  • Face wash and moisturiser
  • Medications: Any daily prescriptions — don't risk these being in a lost or delayed box
  • Contact lenses and solution (if applicable)
  • Hair brush and ties
  • Toilet paper (minimum 4 rolls — you'll use more than you think on day one)
  • Hand soap: A small pump bottle for the bathroom

Bedding — Non-Negotiable

  • Fitted sheet + flat sheet (for your bed size)
  • Pillows (2 per person — don't rely on finding them in a box)
  • Pillow cases
  • Doona/quilt — pack the whole thing. You will not have the energy to hunt for it at 11pm
  • Mattress protector (if your mattress is already at the new home)

If your mattress is being delivered the same day, confirm the delivery time in advance. If it won't arrive until the next day, pack an air mattress or arrange to sleep somewhere else. Do not plan to "figure it out" — you'll be too exhausted.

Kitchen Survival Kit

  • Kettle (if you don't have one at the new home already). This is the first thing you'll want after a day of moving. Browse compact kettles →
  • 2 mugs
  • Tea, coffee, sugar, long-life milk (or a small carton from the servo)
  • Water bottles (2-3 filled — you'll be dehydrated from the physical work)
  • Snacks: Muesli bars, crackers, fruit, nuts — anything that doesn't need cooking or refrigeration
  • Paper plates, paper cups, plastic cutlery — for meals on day 1 without needing to unpack the kitchen
  • Bottle opener / corkscrew — for the celebratory beer or wine. You earned it.

Cleaning Basics

  • Multipurpose spray + a cloth: For wiping down benchtops, the toilet seat, and sink before you use them. Even if the previous owner cleaned, you'll want to wipe things down yourself.
  • Paper towels: For spills, wiping hands, and general moving day mess
  • Bin bags: You'll generate rubbish immediately (packing tape, bubble wrap, take-away containers). Without bin bags, it piles up fast. Pack at least one roll.
  • Hand sanitiser: Your hands will be filthy from moving boxes. Hand sanitiser bridges the gap before you set up soap at every sink.

Tech and Essentials

  • Phone charger (+ cable): The single most forgotten item on moving day. Pack TWO — one in the first-night box, one in your pocket.
  • Laptop + charger (if you need it for work the next day)
  • Torch / flashlight: New homes have unfamiliar light switches. Finding the bathroom at 3am in a pitch-dark house you've never slept in is surprisingly disorienting. Browse flashlights →
  • Portable Bluetooth speaker: Playing music or a podcast makes the empty house feel less empty. It's a small thing that makes a big emotional difference. Browse speakers →
  • WiFi details: Write down your new home's internet provider, account number, and connection date. If the internet isn't connected yet, use your phone as a hotspot.

Update Your Insurance Address — Same Day, Not Next Week

Two insurance policies need updating the moment your old address stops being your primary residence. Forget either and the next claim can be partially or fully denied:

  • Car insurance — your premium is partly priced on where the car parks overnight. Move into a lower-theft postcode and you typically get a refund pro-rated; move into a higher-theft one and the insurer expects to be told so they can re-rate. Either way, file the change within 14 days of settlement.
  • Health insurance — your hospital cover ties to a specific Medicare region. Some funds adjust premiums by state, and your nearest preferred provider list changes too. Log the address change in the fund's portal.

If you've taken on a mortgage at settlement, this is also the week to review life insurance aligned to the loan balance and income protection at 75% of your salary — both are at their cheapest for under-40 buyers.

Important Documents

Keep these in a folder or envelope in your first-night box — not in a random box:

  • Keys (all copies — front door, back door, letterbox, garage)
  • Settlement documents / contract of sale
  • Home insurance policy details
  • Utility connection confirmations (electricity, gas, internet — with reference numbers)
  • Emergency contacts: Your conveyancer, real estate agent, insurance company, landlord insurance (if applicable), and a local locksmith (in case of key issues)
  • Removalist booking confirmation

Clothing

  • Change of clothes for tomorrow: Something comfortable for unpacking day. You'll be bending, lifting, and sweating.
  • Pyjamas
  • Underwear and socks (2 pairs)
  • A warm layer: New homes can feel cold at night before the heating is set up, especially in Melbourne and Canberra winters.
  • Thongs / flip-flops: For walking around the house while floors are dirty from foot traffic.

Kids and Pets

If you have children or pets, pack a separate first-night bag for them:

Kids

  • Nappies and wipes (if applicable)
  • Favourite toy or comfort item (losing this on moving day is a crisis)
  • Change of clothes
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Pyjamas and bedding
  • Tablet/entertainment for the car ride

Pets

  • Food (enough for 2 days) and food/water bowls
  • Leads, collar, harness
  • Litter tray and litter (cats) — set up immediately in the new home
  • Bed or blanket (familiar smell helps them settle)
  • Vet contact details for the new area
  • Medication if applicable

The Bonus Items

Not essential, but they make the first night significantly better:

  • Scented candle: As we mentioned in our making it feel like home guide, a scented candle transforms the atmosphere of an empty house. Light it after the movers leave and suddenly it feels less foreign. Browse candles →
  • A good bottle of wine (or champagne): You just bought your first home. Sit on the floor with your partner, surrounded by boxes, and toast what you've achieved. This is a moment you'll remember forever.
  • Take-away menu or food delivery app: You're not cooking on night one. Have UberEats or Menulog ready, or grab pizza on the way to the new house.

Moving Day Timeline

For a smooth day, follow this rough timeline:

  • 7:00am: Final pack. Load first-night box into your car. Do a final walkthrough of the old place.
  • 8:00am: Removalists arrive and start loading.
  • 10:00-12:00pm: Travel to new home. Unlock, do a quick clean of bathroom and kitchen.
  • 12:00-3:00pm: Removalists unload. Direct furniture to the right rooms.
  • 3:00-5:00pm: Make the bed. Set up the bathroom. Unpack the kitchen survival kit.
  • 5:00pm: Order dinner. Light the candle. You're home.

Packing Supplies You'll Need

Before packing day, stock up on:

  • Moving boxes: Buy from Bunnings or order online. A mix of small (books, heavy items), medium (general), and large (bedding, light bulky items). Browse moving boxes →
  • Packing tape + dispenser: Don't skimp — cheap tape peels off in transit. Browse packing tape →
  • Bubble wrap: For fragile items. Browse bubble wrap →
  • Marker pens (thick): For labelling every box with contents and destination room. Label on the side, not the top — you can read the label when boxes are stacked.
  • Colour-coded stickers: One colour per room. Stick on boxes and on the door of each room at the new house so removalists know exactly where each box goes. Browse moving labels →

The Week Before Moving Day — Preparation Checklist

A smooth moving day starts the week before. Complete these tasks in the 7 days leading up to the move:

  • 7 days before: Confirm removalist booking (time, address, contact number). Start packing non-essential items — out-of-season clothes, books, decorations, rarely used kitchen items.
  • 5 days before: Pack the first-night box. Set it aside clearly labelled. Start defrosting the freezer if needed. Notify Australia Post of your address change ($37.95 for 12 months mail redirect).
  • 3 days before: Pack remaining rooms except kitchen and bathroom essentials. Disassemble furniture that won't fit through doors assembled (bed frames, large desks). Keep hardware in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture piece.
  • 1 day before: Pack final kitchen and bathroom items. Clean the old home if required. Do a final meter reading for electricity and gas. Take photos of meter readings for your records. Charge all devices.
  • Moving morning: Strip the bed last (bedding goes in the first-night box). Do a final walkthrough of every room, cupboard, and the garage. Check that utilities are connected at the new address. Take photos of the empty old home for bond/condition record.

After Moving Day — First Week Priorities

Once the truck is unloaded and the removalists have left, here's the priority order for settling in:

  1. Night 1: Make the bed, set up the bathroom, order food, collapse.
  2. Day 2: Unpack the kitchen (the room you'll use most — having a functional kitchen makes everything else easier).
  3. Day 3-4: Unpack bedrooms, set up wardrobes, hang curtains for privacy.
  4. Day 5-7: Living room, office, remaining boxes. Flatten and recycle empty boxes as you go.
  5. Week 2+: Pictures, decorations, organisation, and all the things that make it feel like home. See our guide to making your house feel like home.

Utility Connections — Don't Forget

Arriving to a house with no power or hot water is more common than you'd think. Organise these before moving day:

  • Electricity and gas: Contact your chosen provider at least 5 business days before moving. Confirm the connection date matches your move-in date. Take a meter reading photo on arrival.
  • Internet: Book your NBN or internet connection 2-3 weeks before moving — some connections take 7-14 business days to activate. Without internet on day one, you can't stream, work from home, or set up smart home devices.
  • Water: Usually stays connected between owners, but confirm with your conveyancer.

NestPath can help you connect all your utilities in one step — see our free utilities connection service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pack in a first-night box?

Everything you need for the first 24 hours without opening any other box: toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, toilet paper, hand soap), bedding (sheets, pillows, doona), kitchen survival (kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, snacks, water, paper plates), cleaning basics (multipurpose spray, paper towels, bin bags), tech (phone charger, torch), a change of clothes, and important documents (keys, insurance, utility confirmations). Pack it the night before and keep it in your car — not on the moving truck.

What do I need on moving day that people forget?

The top five most-forgotten items on moving day: (1) Phone charger — pack two. (2) Toilet paper — you'll need it within the first hour. (3) Bin bags — rubbish accumulates immediately from packaging. (4) Torch — you'll need it the first night in an unfamiliar house. (5) Snacks and water — moving is physical work and you'll forget to eat. Honourable mention: cleaning spray and cloths for wiping down surfaces before your belongings go in.

How do I label moving boxes properly?

Write on the SIDE of the box (not the top — tops are hidden when boxes are stacked). Include: (1) the destination room (Kitchen, Master Bedroom, etc.), (2) a brief description of contents (Pots and Pans, Winter Clothes), and (3) FRAGILE if applicable. Use colour-coded stickers — assign one colour per room and stick matching stickers on the room doors at the new home. This lets removalists place boxes in the right rooms without asking you every time. It sounds like overkill, but it saves hours of re-sorting later.
