The Australian reviews here read like a case study in who bed socks are for. One buyer chose them for a 96 year old mother. Another said the top is not tight, which she found good for swollen legs or for anyone managing diabetes. An Australian buyer who gave them to a friend reported that the friend uses them as bed socks and finds them warm, comfortable and cosy. Another said they were very soft and beautifully boxed, with subtle colours, and that she felt like she was giving herself a present. That is the reaction you are paying the extra few dollars for. This is the pick for a Mother's Day, a housewarming, or the first winter in a new house when someone discovers how cold an uninsulated bedroom gets.

The listing does not state a pack quantity in the title, so check what you are getting. The listing is unusually specific for this category. The fibre is quoted as 95 per cent polyester and 5 per cent elastane, the cuffs are described as soft and elastic rather than gripping, and the toe and heel stitching is reinforced, which is exactly where a plush sock gives out first. These are genuinely unisex in everything but the size run, so if you take a men's 6 or above and want a loose warm sock, this is the pick regardless of who the listing is aimed at.

The reviews carry two warnings. An Australian customer expected a non slip sole from the images and did not get one. Another reported a pair tearing on the first day of indoor wear, a real failure even at one report against 219 ratings. Polyester plush is soft, and soft is not the same as tough.

It holds a 4.8 star average, sharing the top rating with the wool blend above, but from only 8 ratings, the smallest review base on this page and the reason it sits last rather than higher. The listing claims 100 per cent cashmere with seamless toes sewn by hand, made in Inner Mongolia.

The Australian reviews are short but consistent. One buyer called them the best cashmere socks she had bought and singled out the reinforcement at the toe and heel, which she said other cashmere socks lacked and which is exactly where they wear through. Another said they were soft and well made at a good price for the fibre.

Cashmere earns its price for one reason: warmth per gram with no clamminess. It is thinner than a plush slipper sock and still warmer, and it does not trap sweat, so it stays comfortable all night rather than the first two hours. If you have kicked four pairs of fluffy socks off by midnight, this is the honest upgrade path. Be clear eyed though: eight ratings is a very small sample, the brand on the listing is generic, and cashmere needs hand washing or a wool cycle with an enzyme free detergent.

What to look for in bed socks

Cuff pressure is the first thing to check and almost nobody mentions it. The bed sock results in Australia are dominated by brand shops rather than reviews, and several of those brands make good socks not sold on Amazon Australia in a form we can price and rate. Heat Holders thermal sleep socks appear constantly in Australian shopping results and suit anyone chasing maximum thickness, but the Amazon Australia listings we found lacked the rating history to include with confidence. Chemist Warehouse, Kmart and Big W sell bed socks for about eight to twelve dollars, and for a single pair with the groceries they are fine. Do bed socks actually help you fall asleep faster?

For a lot of people, yes. Falling asleep depends partly on your core temperature dropping, and your body sheds that heat through the blood vessels in your hands and feet. A well known 1999 study in the journal Nature found warm feet were linked with faster sleep onset, and sleep researchers have pointed at foot warming ever since. Bed socks are the cheapest way to trigger that on a cold night. They are not a cure for insomnia, and if your feet are already warm they will only make you sweat.

Is it bad to wear socks to bed every night?

For most healthy adults it is fine, and the risks are practical rather than medical. Socks that are too tight at the cuff leave marks on ankles that swell overnight, and synthetics worn every night can trap sweat, which is not ideal for skin prone to fungal problems.
