Best Gifts for 9 Year Olds in Australia 2026: 10 Picks for Every Budget

This page is for one age only: a nine year old. Every pick states an age on its listing that includes nine, every product fact comes from its listing, and the star rating sits beside the number of ratings behind it. The gifts fall into three bands, under $25, under $50 and under $100, with a top pick in each. For the year before, see our gifts for 8 year olds guide.

Best gifts for 9 year olds under $25

Top pick under $25: Because of Winn-Dixie

Top pick under $25: Because of Winn-Dixie, because it is a 192 page classic about friendship, family and a dog that changes everything, with a listed reading age of 9 to 12.

The listing describes a beloved middle grade classic by Kate DiCamillo for kids ages 9 to 12 in grades 4 to 7, a 192 page paperback from Candlewick Press, about 13 by 19.5 cm. It holds 4.7 stars from more than 14,000 ratings.

It suits a child who already reads chapter books alone. The honest catch: it is a book rather than a toy, so it works best alongside a main present.

Best foam dart blaster: NERF Elite 2.0 Commander RD-6

Best foam dart blaster: the NERF Elite 2.0 Commander RD-6, because the listing gives it a six dart rotating drum, 12 darts and tactical rails, and says it fires darts up to 27 metres.

The title names a 6 dart rotating drum, 12 darts, tactical rails and barrel and stock attachment points, the feature bullet says it fires darts up to 27 metres, and the title lists it for ages 8+. It holds 4.6 stars from more than 24,000 ratings, the most on this page.

It suits a child who likes foam dart play. The honest catch: the title carries the words US Version, so read the full title before you buy.

Best LEGO desk decor set: LEGO Botanicals Daisies

Best LEGO desk decor set: the LEGO Botanicals Daisies, because 133 pieces build three large daisies, two stems of small daisies and three sprigs of lavender that stay on the desk.

The listing names it for girls and boys aged 9 and over, with a small ladybird on one of the lavender stems. The larger daisy is over 20 cm high and the smaller over 16 cm, and the built flowers become bedroom or desk decor, though a vase is not included. It holds 4.8 stars from more than 2,100 ratings, the highest rating in this band.

It suits a child who likes to make something and keep it. The honest catch: it is a flower set for display rather than a toy, with far fewer ratings than the two picks above.

Best gifts for 9 year olds under $50

Top pick under $50: LEGO Creator Space Shuttle

Top pick under $50: the LEGO Creator Space Shuttle, because its 144 pieces build three space models in one, a shuttle that rebuilds into an astronaut figure or a spaceship.

The listing describes a 3 in 1 set, a Space Shuttle and a posable astronaut figure with lots of accessories, named for kids aged 6+, a portable size to take on the go, with instructions in the LEGO Builder app. It holds 4.7 stars from more than 8,700 ratings.

It suits a nine year old who likes space. The honest catch: the listing age is 6 and over, so it has the lowest listed age of the LEGO sets here and fewer pieces than the two LEGO sets in the next band.

Best pocket puzzle game: Moose Games Flipslide

Best pocket puzzle game: the Moose Games Flipslide, because it is a handheld puzzle game the listing files as a travel toy for ages 8 to 13, with four game modes.

The listing describes an electronic handheld game with four modes, Speed, Multiplayer, Level and Memory. The item details give one player, about 7.6 by 15.2 by 4.9 cm, about 120 g and two LR44 batteries, and the description says the batteries are included. It holds 4.6 stars from more than 12,000 ratings.

It suits a child who likes a quick game to take on a trip, which the listing describes for a long car ride. The honest catch: the item details say one player while the description lists a Multiplayer mode, so check the listing if playing together matters.

Best STEM building kit: Smartivity Robotic Mechanical Hand

Best STEM building kit: the Smartivity Robotic Mechanical Hand, because the child builds a mechanical hand from engineered wood with a step by step manual, and the listing names it for kids 8 to 14 years old.

The listing describes all parts included plus a lifetime supply of replacement parts, calls the kit screen free and lists it for boys and girls aged 8 to 14. It holds 4.5 stars from 4,000 ratings.

It suits the child who takes things apart to see how they work. The honest catch: it has the lowest star rating on this page at 4.5, and the child builds it before using it.

Best craft kit: Skillmatics Foil Fun Girl Power

Best craft kit: the Skillmatics Foil Fun Girl Power, because pressing a foil sheet onto a sticker or magnet and peeling it away makes a shiny design with no mess.

The listing includes 20 plus magnets, 60 plus foam stickers, 150 foil sheets and an instruction manual, and the finished designs go on a locker, fridge, notebook or bottle. It calls the kit mess free and screen free, for girls ages 7 to 13, and names it a party activity. It holds 4.7 stars from more than 1,400 ratings.

It suits a child who decorates everything she owns. The honest catch: the listing is written for girls ages 7 to 13, and the title calls it a gift for tweens and adults, so check it suits the child.

Best gifts for 9 year olds under $100

Top pick under $100: LEGO Disney Stitch

Top pick under $100: the LEGO Disney Stitch figure, because 730 pieces build Stitch in his Hawaiian shirt with ears that move up or down, a turning head and a hand that holds a brick built ice cream cone.

The listing describes a displayable Lilo and Stitch model with a buildable ice cream cone and a flower to decorate him, built to play with and then display. The title gives ages 9 to 12, the bullets say 9 plus year old girls and boys, and the item details list 730 pieces. It holds 4.8 stars from more than 5,700 ratings, the highest rating in this band.

It suits a fan of the film who wants the set with the most pieces on this page. The honest catch: the title is aimed at girls though the bullets say girls and boys, and at 730 pieces it has the most pieces on this page, so it takes the most time.

Best LEGO Technic car: LEGO Technic Off-Road Race Buggy

Best LEGO Technic car: the LEGO Technic Off-Road Race Buggy, because its 219 pieces build a moving four cylinder engine, rear suspension and flex steering that lets the buggy tilt from side to side.

The listing names the set for kids aged 8+, gives a finished car over 9 cm high, 17 cm long and 11 cm wide, and calls LEGO Technic an introduction to engineering through realistic movement and mechanisms. It holds 4.7 stars from more than 6,000 ratings.

It suits the child who would rather build a car than a character. The honest catch: it is the second LEGO set in this band, so choose it over Stitch only for a car fan, and the listing itself calls it a small LEGO set.

Best science kit: National Geographic Earth Science Kit

Best science kit: the National Geographic Earth Science Kit, because it packs more than 15 experiments, from growing a crystal and erupting a volcano to two geologic dig kits, into one box the listing says is enough to share.

The listing counts duelling water tornadoes among the experiments, adds a detailed learning guide that explains the science at work, and calls the instructions clear and easy to follow, with enough to share with family, friends or classmates. The item details give ages 8 years and up, a box about 22 by 8 by 30.5 cm and no batteries required. It holds 4.7 stars from more than 17,000 ratings across versions of the kit.

It suits the child who asks why about everything and has a sibling or friend to share the volcano with. The honest catch: the rating count pools other versions of this kit, so the number is not for this box alone.

How to choose a gift for a 9 year old

Check the age on the listing

Every pick states an age that includes nine, and the range shows who the maker aimed it at. The Space Shuttle is listed for ages 6+, the lowest listed age among the LEGO sets here. The Daisies and the Stitch figure start at 9, the Smartivity hand, the Technic buggy, the NERF blaster, Flipslide and the science kit at 8, and the book gives a reading age of 9 to 12.

Build, play or read

Builders get the most from the four LEGO sets and the Smartivity hand, which end up as something to keep. Active kids want the NERF blaster, or Flipslide for the car. Readers get Because of Winn-Dixie, and the science kit suits the child who would rather do an experiment than build a model.

Gifts for a 9 year old girl or boy

Three listings name girls and boys together: the Daisies, the Smartivity hand and the Technic buggy. Two lean towards girls: Foil Fun Girl Power is written for girls aged 7 to 13, and the Stitch title says girls aged 9 to 12, though its bullets add boys. The book, the NERF blaster, the Space Shuttle, Flipslide and the science kit name neither. For more ideas, see our gifts for girls guide and our gifts for 10 year old boys guide, which overlaps this age.

Solo or shared

Flipslide's item details give one player, though its description lists a Multiplayer mode, and a LEGO set can be one child's project. The science kit listing says it has enough to share with family, friends or classmates, Foil Fun is named as a party activity, and the NERF blaster's specification lists one player. Pick a shared gift for a child with siblings close in age.

Match the gift to your budget

Each band has a top pick and at least one alternative of a different kind, so you can stay under $25, under $50 or under $100 without settling. Under $25 suits a stocking gift or a present from a cousin, and the two bigger bands suit the main present. For a child turning ten soon, the gifts for 10 year old boys guide picks up where this one ends.
