Best Gifts for a Newborn in Australia 2026: 8 Rattles, Keepsakes and Bodysuits for Every Budget

Newborn gifts work best when they are something the parents use, something the baby holds, or something the family keeps. This guide sorts eight picks by budget, with a top pick in each band and the alternatives beside it, using each listing’s own words and its rating.

Best gifts for a newborn under $25

Top pick under $25: Bright Starts Oball Easy Grasp Rattle

Top pick under $25: the Bright Starts Oball Easy Grasp rattle, because the listing says it is made for newborns and up and it holds 4.8 stars from more than 136,000 ratings.

The listing describes three rattles in one, an award winning design made for little fingers, and a smooth, flexible toy for newborns and up. The title gives a size of about 10.2 cm, and the listing says to keep it in the nappy bag and the nursery. It holds 4.8 stars from 136,486 ratings.

It suits anyone who wants a first gift for a baby they have not met yet. The honest catch: the listing title shows the blue one, so check the colour options on the listing before you wrap it.

For practical gifts: Burt’s Bees Baby Washcloths

For practical gifts: the Burt’s Bees baby washcloths, because the listing words them as absorbent knit terry made of 100% organic cotton.

The listing describes GOTS certified organic cotton, a smooth side and a loop knit terry side, and a size of about 22.9 cm square. You choose between 3, 6 or 12 packs in gender neutral, girl and boy prints. The listing calls them newborn essentials and great gifts for every parent, and they hold 4.8 stars from 8,264 ratings.

It suits parents who like practical gifts and a friend who wants to bring something useful. The honest catch: washcloths are practical rather than exciting, so they work best paired with a toy such as the Oball rattle.

Best gifts for a newborn under $50

Top pick under $50: Simple Joys by Carter’s Bodysuit Pack

Top pick under $50: the Simple Joys by Carter’s long sleeve bodysuits, because a pack of 5 is the gift new parents go through fastest and it holds 4.8 stars from more than 43,000 ratings.

The listing names it a Simple Joys by Carter’s long sleeve bodysuit in a pack of 5, and the linked option sits in the baby girls department, so pick the print and size on the listing. It gives no description beyond that. It holds 4.8 stars from 43,628 ratings.

It suits new parents who can always use another bodysuit. The honest catch: choose the size on the listing, and the rating is shared across its sizes and colours.

For a rattle and teether: Manhattan Toy Winkel Rattle

For a rattle and teether: the Manhattan Toy Winkel, because the listing calls it a rattle and sensory teether and it holds 4.8 stars from more than 40,000 ratings.

The listing describes a maze of soft, continuous tubes, a middle cube that holds a rattle sound, and a toy that promotes clutching and two handed play. It names a Blue Chip Award from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, BPA free teethable plastic loops and an age range of 0 to 24 months. It holds 4.8 stars from 40,477 ratings.

It suits a gift that is a toy now and a teether later. The honest catch: it is the same type of toy as the Oball rattle in the lower band, so choose one or the other.

For a baby print keepsake: Pearhead Baby Memory Book

For a baby print keepsake: the Pearhead baby memory book, because it comes with an ink pad and imprint cards for the baby’s print on the cover.

The listing describes a guided journal and album with over 60 fill in, acid free pages, a spine bound in book cloth with a satin ribbon, and a clean touch ink pad. It holds 4.8 stars from 24,845 ratings.

It suits parents who want a simple keepsake they can start in the first weeks. The honest catch: it has over 60 pages against the 120 in the ZIRI & ZANE book in the next band, so it is the smaller keepsake.

Best bath gift set: Spasilk 23 Piece Bath Set

Best bath gift set: the Spasilk 23 piece set, because it bundles hooded towels and washcloths and holds 4.7 stars from almost 10,000 ratings.

The listing includes 20 washcloths of about 22.9 cm square and 3 hooded towels of about 76.2 by 66 cm. It describes embroidered or printed green dots designs and calls it a baby shower gift for newborn boys and girls alike. It holds 4.7 stars from 9,742 ratings. Our hooded towel guide compares towels on their own.

It suits someone who wants a gift that fills a box. The honest catch: 20 of the 23 pieces are washcloths, and only 3 are towels, so check that is the mix you want.

Best gifts for a newborn under $100

Top pick under $100: ZIRI & ZANE Keepsake Baby Memory Book

Top pick under $100: the ZIRI & ZANE keepsake baby memory book, because the listing describes a 120 page book from before birth to age 5 with folders for keepsakes, and it holds 4.9 stars from more than 6,600 ratings.

The listing describes sections that run from before birth through the first year to age 5, with spaces for photos, a growth chart, first holidays and a letters to you section. It includes 6 large folders for special keepsakes and a protective sleeve, and the external size is 23.5 by 25 cm. The listing words the pages as gender neutral and says it fits any type of family. It holds 4.9 stars from 6,692 ratings. Our keepsake box guide covers where the extra keepsakes can go.

It suits a parent who wants one book for the whole first five years, or a group of relatives giving a bigger gift together. The honest catch: it only becomes a keepsake if the parents fill it in, and it has fewer ratings than the play gym below.

For a play gym: Baby Einstein Ocean Explorers Gym

For a play gym: the Baby Einstein Ocean Explorers gym, because the listing describes 4 modes from lay and play to tummy time with 6 detachable sensory toys and a kick piano.

The listing says it is for ages 0 to 36 months, with a piano that plays more than 90 melodies, sounds, lights and phrases and teaches colours, shapes and numbers in English, Spanish, French and German. It includes 2 toy bars, and the listing gives dimensions of about 45.7 by 86.4 by 68.6 cm. The listing says the mat is machine washable and the toys wipe clean. It holds 4.6 stars from 28,713 ratings. Our play mat guide compares simpler options.

It suits a bigger gift from grandparents or a group, for a baby who will spend time on the floor. The honest catch: it needs 3 AA batteries, which are not included, and at about 86 cm across it takes up floor space.

How to choose a gift for a newborn

Something useful, something to hold or something to keep

Every pick here is one of three kinds. Bodysuits and washcloths are used the first week, rattles and gyms are for the baby to hold and kick, and memory books are for the parents to keep. Decide which kind fits your relationship with the family, then choose within your budget.

Pair a small gift with a practical one

A rattle on its own is a small present. A rattle with a pack of washcloths, or a bodysuit pack with a memory book, makes a gift that feels complete without a big spend. Each band on this page has a top pick and at least one alternative, so you can mix across bands.

Check the size and colour on the listing

The bodysuit pack, the washcloths and the rattle all come in several options, and the bodysuit rating is shared across its sizes and colours. Choose the size, pack count and colour on the listing itself, and check the sizes the listing offers for the bodysuits.

Remember the parents

A gift can support the parents as well as the baby, and the parents are the ones opening it. A keepsake book or a useful pack gives them something that is theirs. If the new mum is on your list too, give her something just for her as well.

Frequently asked questions

What are good gifts for a newborn?

Start with something the parents will use or keep. The Bright Starts Oball rattle is the first toy under $25, the Simple Joys by Carter’s bodysuit pack is the useful gift under $50, and the ZIRI & ZANE memory book is the keepsake under $100. Pair a toy with a practical item for a balanced gift.

What is a useful gift for a newborn baby?

Washcloths and bodysuits are the useful gifts here. The Burt’s Bees washcloths are absorbent knit terry in 100% organic cotton, and the Simple Joys by Carter’s pack gives five bodysuits in one gift. The Spasilk 23 piece set adds three hooded towels to its washcloths.

What is a good gift for new parents or newborn mums?

Give the parents something for themselves as well as the baby. The listing describes the ZIRI & ZANE memory book as a gift for new parents, with room to record the first five years, and the Pearhead book adds an ink pad for the baby’s print. Add the Burt’s Bees washcloths for something practical.

What is a unique gift for a newborn?

Choose a keepsake rather than another toy. The Pearhead memory book comes with an ink pad and imprint cards for the baby’s print on the cover, and the ZIRI & ZANE book has six large folders for special keepsakes. Either one becomes a record of the first years once the parents fill it in.

What are good Christmas gifts for a newborn?

For a first Christmas, a rattle or play gym is the easy choice. The Bright Starts Oball rattle is described as a toy for newborns and up, and the Baby Einstein Ocean Explorers gym is for ages 0 to 36 months. The ZIRI & ZANE book also has a first holidays section.

Are there personalised gifts for a newborn?

None of the picks here are engraved or named, but two keepsakes become personal once the parents fill them in. The Pearhead book takes the baby’s print on its cover, and the ZIRI & ZANE book has space for photos and a letters to you section. A handwritten card makes any pick personal.

What is a good gift for a newborn boy or girl?

Choose a gender neutral pick and it suits either. The ZIRI & ZANE book is described as gender neutral, the Burt’s Bees listing says its washcloths come in gender neutral, girl and boy prints, and the Simple Joys by Carter’s pack has prints to choose on the listing. The Oball rattle works for any baby too.

What is the best gift for a newborn under $50?

The Simple Joys by Carter’s pack of five long sleeve bodysuits is our top pick under $50, with 4.8 stars from more than 43,000 ratings. For a toy, the Manhattan Toy Winkel rattle and teether holds the same 4.8, and for a keepsake the Pearhead memory book comes with an ink pad.
