How to choose a toy for a 5 year old

Start with the age on the listing

Some listings give upper ages as well as minimum ages. Alphabet Bingo's title and bullets give ages 4 and up, but its table gives 4 to 5 years. Match and Spell's title gives ages 4+ and its table 4 to 6 years. Megalodon Storm's bullets give ages 4 and up, its title 4 to 6+, and its table 4 to 6 years. The raceway table gives 5 to 10 years. Read the full range when buying for an older child.

What a five year old does with a toy

Choose an activity the child enjoys: playing a game, making jewellery, sewing, mixing colours, building runs or riding. The four games are Trouble, Match and Spell, The Floor is Lava and Alphabet Bingo. The craft kits involve making, Rainbow Lab and the marble run involve mixing or building, and the scooters, truck and Hot Wheels sets offer riding or racing.

Playing alone, with others, indoors or out

Trouble is for 2 to 4 players, and Alphabet Bingo and The Floor is Lava list 2 to 6. For a child who prefers making something, consider the craft kits, science kit or marble run. For riding or remote control play, compare the scooters and Megalodon Storm. Our kids scooter guide compares more kids scooters.

Toys for a boy or a girl

Choose the activity and character the child likes. The Huffy bullets call the Spider-Man version perfect for boys aged 5 and up, while its title also lists Disney Princess and Frozen designs. Trouble's listing describes gifts for girls and boys. Our gifts for girls guide offers more gift ideas.
