The topper is the one decoration everybody looks at. Baubles blur into a general shimmer, but the thing on the tip of the tree sits at eye level and lands in every photo taken in front of it. It is also the one most likely to go wrong: too heavy and the leader branch flops sideways, too tall and it grazes the ceiling, too glittery and you are vacuuming gold flakes out of the carpet until Australia Day.

Australian rooms make this harder than the overseas guides admit. A standard ceiling here is about 2.4 m, plenty of us run a 1.8 m or 2.1 m artificial tree, and once you add a stand and a topper you run out of air fast. The real questions are size, weight, mounting and power, not just star or angel. We went through the toppers sold on Amazon Australia, threw out the ones that were really baubles or ribbon by another name, and kept seven you can actually fit this December.

What is the best Christmas tree topper in Australia?

For most trees, the XZXWZX LED Star Treetop with Golden Pearl is the safest buy. It is a battery-lit metal star of about 20 cm by 15 cm with 20 mini lights threaded through the frame, which is the size and style that suits the widest range of trees, and it carries far more customer reviews than anything else we shortlisted. It is not the flashiest topper here, and that is the point: it does not fight your other decorations.

If you would rather have an open wire star that reads as metal instead of as a light fitting, the HANCOOK Gold Wire Star Tree Topper is our runner-up. It is a 20 cm hollow glitter star with 20 LEDs woven into the frame, so the bulbs disappear during the day and only announce themselves after dark.

On a small tree, a second tree in a kid's room, or a first Christmas where the money goes on the tree itself, the Fyvadio Glittered Gold Hollow Star Topper is the cheapest of our seven picks and still gives you a lit 3D metal star. It has only a handful of reviews so far, which is why it is the budget pick.

How did we choose these Christmas tree toppers?

NestPath does not run a Christmas display in a warehouse. We research and study what is on sale in Australia, then apply a short filter that removes most of the noise here.

  • Every pick is a genuine tree topper, not a bauble, a garland bow or a finial sold in a three pack.
  • Every pick was confirmed in stock on Amazon Australia at drafting, with rating and review count read at the same time.
  • Materials, dimensions and battery requirements come from the seller listing.
  • Seven brands, so no two picks are the same import with a different sticker.

Which topper suits almost any tree?

The XZXWZX LED Star Treetop with Golden Pearl is the one we would hand to somebody buying their first topper without asking follow-up questions. It is a metal five-point star of roughly 20 cm by 15 cm in warm gold with pearl detailing and a dusting of faux snow, 20 mini LEDs along the frame, and a battery box behind the star.

It is the size and style that suits the most common tree heights, from a 1.5 m apartment tree to a 1.8 m family tree, and it is shallow enough that it does not lean forward the way a heavy resin figure does. The gold is warm rather than mirror-bright, so it still reads as a deliberate decoration unlit during the day. It also carries far more customer reviews than anything else we shortlisted, which matters in a category where listings appear in October and vanish in January.

Size is the first reason it is the default. At about 20 cm across it fills the top of a 1.5 m to 1.8 m tree without towering over it, and because the star is only a couple of centimetres deep it does not lean forward the way a heavy resin figure does.

The second reason is that it is quiet. The gold is warm rather than mirror-bright, the pearls read as texture rather than bling from a metre away, and unlit by day it still looks deliberate instead of like a plastic torch bolted to a star. It runs on batteries, which is the right call at the top of a tree: no cord down the front and nothing to pull the tree sideways. It is also the most reviewed of our seven picks by a wide margin, which matters in a category where listings appear in October and vanish in January.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The rating sits at the lower end of our shortlist, and the feedback is consistent: the lights are decorative rather than bright, and some buyers expected a bigger star than the listed dimensions describe. Check the size before you buy, because there is a larger variant of the same design. The battery box sits behind the star rather than inside it, so on a sparse tree you will tuck a branch across to hide it.

Which topper looks best unlit during the day?

The HANCOOK Gold Wire Star Tree Topper is our runner-up and the buy if you dislike the look of a light fitting on a tree. It is a 3D hollow star built from glittered gold wire, listed at 20 cm, with 20 LEDs run through the frame so the bulbs sit inside the wire rather than on top of it.

Daylight goes straight through an open wire star, so it reads as a sketch of a star with the branches showing through rather than as a lump on the top of the tree. That is worth having in an Australian December when the tree stands in a bright room for most of the day. The hollow build also keeps it light enough for a mid-range artificial leader branch to hold upright without a stake or a tie.

The practical benefit of an open wire star is that daylight goes straight through it. A solid topper reads as a lump at 10 in the morning; a wire star reads as a sketch, with branches showing through behind it. In an Australian December the tree stands in a bright room for 14 hours before anyone dims the lights, so that matters.

The hollow build also means it is light, so the leader branch on a mid-range artificial tree holds it upright without a stake or a tie. That is the failure mode people forget: not that the topper looks wrong, but that it slowly tips forward over three weeks until it points at the coffee table. The LEDs are a warm white that suits gold rather than the blue-white of cheap fairy lights, so match it to your tree lights. A warm topper above cool white strings is the most obvious clash on the whole tree.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Glitter-wrapped wire sheds. Not catastrophically, but you will find gold flecks on the top branches and on your hands, so fit it before you hang baubles. The frame is soft enough to bend if you crush it in storage, and a bent point on a wire star never straightens back to symmetrical. Store this one in a box.

Which topper is the best cheap option for a small tree?

The Fyvadio Glittered Gold Hollow Star Topper is the cheapest of our seven picks, and the one we would put on a 1.8 m tree, a second tree in a bedroom, or a rental where the whole Christmas budget is about $150. It is a 3D metal hollow star with a glitter finish and a string light woven through it, with the topper measuring around 20 cm by 24 cm.

4.6(5)

At this price you are still getting a real metal star rather than printed card or moulded plastic, so it holds its shape year to year and takes a glitter finish that catches light from the side. That is how a topper is actually lit in a living room, from the lamps and tree lights below it. The review base is thin, which is why it sits here as the budget option rather than the headline one, but it is the sensible buy for a 1.8 m tree, or as a deliberately oversized statement on a smaller one.

What you get for the money is a real metal star rather than printed card or moulded plastic. Metal holds its shape year to year, so this is not a one-Christmas purchase, and it takes a glitter finish that catches light from the side, which is how a topper is actually lit in a living room: from the lamps and tree lights below it.

The string light is the compromise at this price. It is a thin wire light run through the star rather than a moulded LED strip, so it is delicate and fiddly to arrange evenly the first time. Sort the wire on the kitchen bench before you climb up, not on a step ladder with a toddler pulling at your leg. Be honest about the review base too: this pick has the fewest customer reviews of our seven, which is why it sits here as the budget option rather than the headline one, but it is the sensible buy for a 1.8 m tree, or as a deliberately oversized statement on a smaller one.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Thin review base, as above. The glitter finish sheds, so expect flecks on the top branches and the carpet under the tree tip. The battery box is small and light, which is good for the branch and bad for finding the switch by feel. A scratch shows gold coating over bare metal.

Which topper should you buy if you want an angel?

The YOFIT 12-Inch Lighted Angel Christmas Tree Topper is the only angel in our lineup and the highest rated of our seven picks. It is a fabric angel of about 30 cm tall with warm white LEDs behind the gown and wings, battery operated, with a hollow cone base that slides over the tip of the tree.

YOFIT 12-inch Lighted Angel Christmas Tree Topper - Battery Operated with Warm White LED Lights, Angel Ornaments for Xmas Tree Decor, Home Holiday Decorations

4.7(52)

The only angel in our lineup and the highest rated of our seven picks. Fabric is the right material for an angel: it diffuses the LEDs into a soft glow instead of showing individual bulbs, it will not chip, and the listing puts it at 0.27 kg so a mid-range artificial leader holds it without a wire tie. Check height before you buy, because at about 30 cm it is one of the tallest picks here and it will not fit a 2.1 m tree under 2.4 m ceilings; size down the tree or choose a shorter topper.

An angel is a different decision from a star. A star is a shape; an angel is a character, and it sets the tone of the whole tree. If your decorations lean traditional, or you grew up with an angel and want your kids to as well, this is the buy. If your tree is minimalist white and timber, it will look out of place.

Fabric is the right material for an angel and the wrong one for almost everything else. It diffuses the LEDs into a soft glow instead of showing individual bulbs, it will not chip, and it weighs very little for its size. The listing puts it at 0.27 kg, which a mid-range artificial leader holds without a wire tie, though a thin real-tree tip will need securing. Height is the thing to check first: at about 30 cm it is one of the tallest picks here, and on a 2.1 m tree under 2.4 m ceilings it will not fit; size down the tree or choose a shorter topper.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Fabric toppers store worse than metal ones because the gown creases and the wings crush, so keep the original box. Battery access sits under the gown, and the warm white LEDs are deliberately dim: tasteful in a dark room, barely-on in a bright one.

Which topper works if you do not want a star or an angel?

The LATERN Gold Velvet Tree Topper Bow is the only bow in our lineup and the only pick here that is not trying to be a light source. It is a velvet and satin bow listed at 30 cm with 110 cm streamers, in gold with glitter mesh through the loops, and it needs no batteries.

4.1(40)

The only bow in our lineup and the only pick here that is not trying to be a light source. It solves the problem of a tree that already has three light sets, a garland and a full load of baubles competing at the top. It is also the most forgiving pick for a flimsy tree tip: no battery box, no rigid frame, and 0.18 kg on the listing, wired on rather than slid over a cone so it fits a real tree or an artificial one with a broken tip.

A bow solves a specific problem: a tree that already has plenty going on. If you have run three light sets, a garland and a full load of baubles, a lit star is one more competing light source. A bow sits quietly, adds a block of colour and texture, and the streamers pull the eye down the front of the tree. Decorators use them on shop trees for exactly that reason.

It is also the most forgiving pick for a flimsy tree tip. There is no battery box and no rigid frame, and the listing puts it at 0.18 kg, so it sits happily on a thin leader that would bend under a metal star. You wire it on rather than sliding it over a cone, so it works on a real tree, an artificial tree with a broken tip, or one whose topper adapter went missing years ago. The 110 cm streamers reach past the midpoint of a 1.8 m tree, so tuck them into the foliage in two or three places.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

This has the lowest rating of our seven picks, and the recurring theme is velvet arriving creased from flat-pack shipping. It recovers with steam or a warm room over a day or two, but it will not look showroom-fresh out of the satchel. Velvet also holds dust and pet hair, and gold shows both.

Which topper does something the others cannot?

The Ubrvhrt Star Christmas Tree Topper with built-in rotating LED projector is the only pick here that throws light onto the ceiling. It is a gold glitter starburst in metal and plastic, with a projector head inside that rotates through four festive images across the ceiling and walls.

4.4(58)

The only pick here that throws light onto the ceiling, with a projector head inside the starburst that rotates through four festive images. It is a want rather than a need, aimed at households with young kids, and it works best with a plain light-coloured ceiling and the tree reasonably close to it. By day the gold glitter starburst still works as a topper rather than looking like a housing with points glued on.

This is a want rather than a need, aimed squarely at households with young kids. With the room lights off, the ceiling carries slowly moving snowflakes and Christmas motifs, and for a four year old that is the best thing in the house. It is the tidier version of the floor-standing projector that gets kicked over every second night.

It works best with a plain, light-coloured ceiling and the tree reasonably close to it, which describes most Australian living rooms with 2.4 m ceilings. A raked ceiling, a dark ceiling or a downlight-heavy room washes the projection out, so switch it on before you commit to a tree position. By day it still works as a topper, because the starburst is decorative rather than a housing with points glued on. The listing does not record batteries as required, so check what power lead is in the box and plan where it will run before the tree is fully decorated.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Projectors add failure modes a plain star does not have: a motor to seize, a lens to smear, and a mechanism that is not repairable at this price. The four images are fixed, so if you dislike one you still see it every rotation. And a projecting topper is fun rather than elegant, so in a formal room it reads as a novelty.

Which topper can you switch on without a step ladder?

The Augshy Snow-White Christmas Tree Topper Star is the only pick here with a remote control, and that solves the most annoying thing about battery toppers. It is a metal star with 20 warm white LEDs and pearl beads, listed at about 12 cm wide, battery operated, with a remote that turns it on and off from the couch.

4.3(10)

The only pick here with a remote control, which removes the nightly reach over the top branches to switch a battery topper on and off. Multiply that by 30 nights and it stops being a gimmick. At around 12 cm wide the star suits a 1.2 m tree, or a taller tree where you want a small point of light rather than a statement.

If you have fitted a battery topper you know the routine: lights on at 6 pm means reaching over the top branches, and lights off at bedtime means doing it again in the dark while trying not to knock baubles off. Multiply that by 30 nights and a remote stops being a gimmick, because otherwise the topper sits dark from the second week of December.

The star itself is smaller than our headline picks. At around 12 cm wide it suits a 1.2 m tree, or a taller tree where you want a small point of light rather than a statement. On a 2.1 m tree it will look undersized.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The review base is thin, second only to our budget pick, so the durability picture is not settled. A remote is one more thing to lose in a box of decorations and one more coin cell to replace, so tape it to the storage box in January. And because the star is small, the pearl detailing is invisible from across the room.

What should you look for in a Christmas tree topper?

Size, weight, mounting, power and finish, in that order.

Size against tree height. The usual rule is a topper between one eighth and one tenth of the tree's height. A 1.5 m tree suits roughly 15 cm to 20 cm; a 1.8 m tree suits 20 cm to 25 cm; a 2.1 m tree can carry 25 cm to 30 cm. Undersize looks accidental, oversize looks top-heavy, and both are obvious in photos.

Ceiling clearance, measured not guessed. Measure floor to ceiling, then assemble the tree in its stand and measure floor to tip. The difference is your topper budget in centimetres, and you want at least 5 cm of air above it. If you are still choosing the tree, our guide to the best Christmas trees in Australia covers heights against room size.

Weight and mounting. Artificial tips flex and real-tree leaders flex more, so anything above about 500 g needs support. There are three mounting systems: a hollow cone that slides over the tip and grips the trunk, a spike or wire stem that pushes into the foliage, and a tie-on bow wired to the leader. Check which you are buying, because a cone too wide for a slim tip wobbles all season.

Lit or unlit, battery or plug. A lit topper gives you a focal point after dark and one more thing to fail. If your tree already carries several light sets, unlit often looks better, and our roundup of the best Christmas lights in Australia sorts the tree lighting properly. Where a topper is lit, batteries beat mains: no cord down the front and nothing pulling the tree sideways. The trade-off is reaching up to switch it, which is why a remote earns its keep.

Glitter and shedding. Glitter-coated metal and glitter mesh both shed, worst in the first week. Fit the topper before you hang baubles and put a sheet under the tree the first time. Plain fabric, velvet and painted metal shed nothing, but check the trim: a velvet bow with glitter mesh through the loops still sheds.

How do you store a tree topper so it survives to next Christmas?

Store it rigid, dry and away from the baubles. Toppers get crushed far more often than they get broken in use, and it happens in January in the garage, not in December on the tree.

For metal stars the enemy is bending. A hollow wire star squashed under a stack of decorations comes out asymmetrical, and a bent wire point never quite goes back. Keep the original carton, or give the star its own compartment in a divided ornament box, and wrap it in tissue rather than newspaper, because newsprint transfers onto glitter in a hot garage. For fabric toppers the enemy is creasing and damp: stuff the gown or bow loops loosely with tissue, box them upright rather than flat, and keep them inside the house.

Take the batteries out. Alkaline cells left in a battery box for 11 months in an Australian garage leak, and a leaked cell corrodes the contacts and kills the topper. Tape the cells to the outside of the box, and the remote with them. Clean everything first with a dry makeup brush, which lifts dust out of wire frames and fabric folds better than a cloth. If the tree is going away at the same time, the best Christmas tree stands in Australia guide covers the other half of that storage problem.

What else will you want with your tree topper?

Six things that make fitting and storing a topper easier.

What else did we consider?

Plenty of what shows up under this search term is not a topper at all, and much of the rest will not arrive in time.

The veryUfun metal glittered hollow wire star is a genuine near-miss: in stock, well rated, and doing the same job as our runner-up in a larger format. We left it off because it duplicates the HANCOOK wire star closely enough that listing both would pad the page.

Novelty toppers were the biggest group we cut. There is a pink flamingo with feather trim, a gingerbread man, a candy cane top hat and a licensed video game star, and all of them are fun. Most showed limited stock or a lead time of days to weeks when we checked, which is fine in September and useless on 20 December. Cheap glitter stars from the likes of Sricam, Higoala and Kodde were shipping on lead time rather than local stock, which for a seasonal buy is the difference between a decoration and a disappointment.

We skipped the Australian retail favourites deliberately, because they are not sold here. Balsam Hill, The Christmas Warehouse and Spotlight hold the genuinely premium end of this category, with fabric angels, lit finials and large lit stars well above the price band on this page. If you want an heirloom topper rather than a good one, buy from them directly. Everything on this page is a single topper bought on its own, not a decoration set with a star on the front of the box.

Christmas tree topper questions, answered

Star or angel: which tree topper is more popular in Australia?

The star is the more popular choice in Australia and has been for decades. It carries the Star of Bethlehem association, it suits any decorating style from traditional gold to minimalist white, and it is easier to size and mount than a figure. Angels are the classic alternative and tend to be treated as heirloom pieces, used on the main family tree rather than swapped out each year. Bows and finials sit third, and they suit people whose tree already has plenty of light and colour going on.

How big should a Christmas tree topper be?

Aim for a topper between one eighth and one tenth of your tree's height. That puts a 1.5 m tree at roughly 15 cm to 20 cm, a 1.8 m tree at 20 cm to 25 cm, and a 2.1 m tree at 25 cm to 30 cm. Then check ceiling clearance separately: measure floor to ceiling, measure floor to the tip of the assembled tree in its stand, and leave at least 5 cm of air above the topper. In a room with standard 2.4 m ceilings, a 2.1 m tree and a 30 cm angel will not fit.

Do lit tree toppers need batteries or a plug?

Most lit toppers sold in Australia run on batteries, usually AA cells in a small box mounted behind the topper. Batteries are the better system at the top of a tree because there is no cord running down the front and nothing to pull the tree sideways. The trade-off is that you have to reach up to switch it on and off, which is why a remote is worth having, and you will replace the cells at least once across a long December.

How do you attach a topper to a Christmas tree?

There are three mounting systems. A hollow cone base slides down over the tip of the tree and grips the trunk, which is the most secure option on an artificial tree. A spike or wire stem pushes down into the foliage and works on a real tree. A bow or ornament style topper is tied on with floral wire, which works on any tree including one that has lost its original adapter. Whichever you have, add two turns of floral wire from the topper down to the next branch whorl if it leans forward at all.

Will a glitter tree topper shed all over the tree?

Glitter-coated metal and glitter mesh both shed, mostly in the first week and mostly onto the top branches directly below the topper. Manage it rather than avoid it: fit the topper before you hang your baubles, wipe the top branches with a dry cloth afterwards, and put an old sheet under the tree the first time. If shedding would genuinely bother you, choose a plain fabric angel, or a bow or star without glitter mesh or a glitter coating, because it is the glitter that sheds rather than the base material.

What else should you sort before the tree goes up?

The topper is the last thing you fit and the first thing people notice, but only if what sits under it is sorted.

Christmas Tree Topper, Fyvadio Glittered Gold Hallow Star with String Light, 3D Metal Hollow Designed Tree Topper for Xmas Tree Decorations, New Year Holiday Party Indoor Decor (25CM)

Ubrvhrt Star Christmas Tree Topper Lighted with Built-in Rotating LED Projector, Gold Glitter Starburst Tree Top Projection of 4 Dynamic Images for Christmas Tree Home Office Party Decor Ornament
