Wrapping paper compared at a glance

One reviewer put it directly: it is half the size of a regular roll, so you use more for the same coverage. Best all-in-one wrapping kit: Edunass Wrapping Paper Set with Tags and String

This solves a different problem. It is $10.99 for five 70cm by 50cm sheets plus eight gift tags and two 10m rolls of natural flax string, so it is a complete wrapping job in one envelope rather than paper you then accessorise.

The sustainability credentials are the most concrete here, and unusually they are stated on the listing rather than implied. Edunass states 100gsm thickness, made from 100% recycled paper and fully recyclable, and describes the paper as biodegradable. That 100gsm figure is the same weight premium Australian letterpress studios quote for heavyweight rolls, and roughly double the 50gsm of a plain kraft packing roll.

The designs are brown and black kraft with heart, star, dot and stripe patterns, deliberately neutral. It suits a birthday, a thank-you gift, an anniversary or a Christmas present, and because string and tags are included the result looks considered without you owning a ribbon drawer.

At 4.3 stars from 385 ratings it is the lowest-rated pick here, which is worth being upfront about. The positive Australian reviews are enthusiastic, with buyers calling the paper excellent quality and repeat-purchasing it. The critical reviews cluster on one fair theme.

Value is the sticking point. At 1.75 square metres you pay around $6.28 per square metre, and one Australian reviewer said plainly that the sheets were small and not worth the price. A second found the paper too thick to wrap with, the flip side of 100gsm stock. Five sheets will not cover a family Christmas either.

What should you look for in wrapping paper?

Five things decide whether a roll is good value or a mistake, and only one of them is the pattern.

Width first, length second. Standard-width paper in Australia is around 70cm to 76cm. Mini rolls are 43cm. That decides whether a shirt box or a bottle of wine wraps in one pass or needs a join. Buy mini rolls knowing you will use more tape and produce more offcuts.

Do the per-square-metre maths. Multiply width by length, then divide the price by the answer. On this page the range runs from about $2.75 to about $6.42 per square metre for paper that is broadly comparable in feel. Nothing else in the aisle saves as much money in ten seconds.

• Store rolls upright, not flat. A roll lying under a bed gets stood on, and a flattened tube produces an edge that will not cut straight. A tall basket or a wardrobe corner works, and standing them up means you can see what you already own.
• Keep sheet packs flat. Sheets sold folded, like the ZCOINS and Edunass packs, crease along the existing fold lines. Store them flat in a drawer and cut around the worst fold.

Supermarket and department store wrap deserves a fair hearing. Kmart's Artwrap FSC roll sits at around six dollars and Big W carries character wrap at around three dollars a sheet, which is unbeatable on price. The complaint that recurs in Australian discussion threads is thickness: shoppers who used to buy heavier stock from Target say the cheap rolls now tear during wrapping.
