Best Beach Toys in Australia 2026: 8 Picks by Age, Toddlers to Older Kids

Beach toys are really three different things: sets for digging, moulds for building, and games for running around. This page compares eight picks across all three, using what each listing says about the pieces, the ages and the materials, so you can buy the right set for the kids you actually have.

We checked 25 listings on Amazon Australia and kept eight. Every listing below is rated 4.5 stars or higher, and where a rating rests on a small count we say so. If the kids will be in the water more than on the sand, see our pool toys guide instead.

Best overall: Hape Beach Basics Sand Toy Set

Best overall: the Hape Beach Basics Sand Toy Set, because it covers the basics with a bucket, spade, rake and sand sifter and is listed for ages 18 months and above.

The listing describes a four piece plastic set with a bucket, spade, rake and sand sifter for the beach or sandbox, with non toxic finishes and child safe materials. It says the pail, shovel, rake and strainer encourage creativity and develop motor skills as kids scoop, sift and build. It holds 4.8 stars from 4,543 ratings, the most of any bucket and spade set on this page.

It suits families who want one set that does everything a first beach trip needs. The honest catch: it is a simple four piece set with no moulds, so older kids who like building castles may want a mould set on top.

Best for sharing and travel: JOYIN 3 Pack Foldable Bucket Set

Best for sharing and travel: the JOYIN 3 Pack, because it gives three foldable buckets with shovels and a mesh bag to carry them in.

The listing describes three sets of foldable pail buckets with shovels and a mesh bag, in yellow, blue and green. Each bucket holds 2.5 litres, and the listing says you press on the folded bucket to snap it back into shape. It calls the buckets collapsible and multi purpose, for the beach, camping, a beach party, fishing and summer activities. It holds 4.7 stars from 2,050 ratings.

It suits siblings, cousins and beach party groups where every child wants their own bucket. The honest catch: it is buckets and shovels only, with no rake or sifter, and the listing gives no age range.

Best sand moulds: Simba Ice Cream Sand Moulds

Best sand moulds: the Simba Ice Cream Sand Moulds, because the listing describes five colourful ice cream cones and a scoop for shaping perfect sand balls.

The listing describes five colourful ice cream cones and a yellow scoop. The listing also gives a size of 15 cm without saying which part that measures. The set is for making ice balls from sand and offering them to friends. It says the set can be used in the sandbox, at the playground, on the beach, in the garden or in the swimming pool, and that it is made in Italy. It holds 4.8 stars from 8,366 ratings, the most of any pick here.

It suits kids who like pretend play and shaping sand rather than just digging it. The honest catch: it is moulds and a scoop only, with no bucket or spade, and the listing gives no age range, so pair it with a set.

Best for toddlers: Green Toys Sand Play Set

Best for toddlers: the Green Toys Sand Play Set, because it is recommended for children 18 months and above and includes a bucket, sand mould, shovel and rake.

The listing calls it sturdy and well designed, great for outdoor play, with a bucket, sand mould, shovel and rake, and recommends it for children 18 months and above. It holds 4.8 stars from 405 ratings.

It suits a first sand play set for a toddler who wants a bucket, sand mould, shovel and rake together. The honest catch: it costs more than the Hape set, and 405 ratings is a smaller count than the Hape or JOYIN sets.

Best eco friendly set: Dantoy BIOplastic Sand and Water Set

Best eco friendly set: the Dantoy BIOplastic Sand and Water Set, because the listing says it is made in Denmark from sugarcane based plastic and is Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified.

The listing describes four pieces: a bucket, watering can, shovel and rake. It says the set is made from a bio based material derived from sugarcane, designed to be 100% recyclable, and certified under the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. It describes the pieces as designed for little hands, for beach, sandpit and garden play, and it is suitable for ages 2 and above. It holds 4.8 stars from 426 ratings.

It suits parents who want a sugarcane based plastic set and like a watering can for wet sand. The honest catch: it is one of the pricier four piece sets, and the listing says suitable for ages 2 and above, so it is not for younger toddlers.

Best for tractor and digger fans: John Deere Sand Castle Bucket and Spade Set

Best for tractor and digger fans: the John Deere Sand Castle Bucket and Spade Set, because it pairs a castle bucket and spade with a toy tractor and is listed for ages 18 months and above.

The listing describes heavy duty plastic with child friendly designs for small hands, authentic design and colouring, and says it improves hand eye coordination. The title lists a bucket, spade and toy tractor for ages 18 months and above. It holds 4.9 stars from 75 ratings.

It suits little farm and tractor fans who will happily drive the tractor through the sand. The honest catch: the rating rests on only 75 ratings so far, and the tractor is a toy that comes with the bucket set, not a ride on digger.

Best beach game for groups: Weehoey Paddle and Ball Set

Best beach game for groups: the Weehoey Paddle and Ball Set, because it gives six paddles and three balls for ages 3 to 12 and comes with a storage bag.

The listing describes six paddles, three balls, one portable storage bag and one gift box. It says you can play indoors, in the backyard, in the park, on the beach or even in the pool, and that it encourages hand eye coordination and social skills. The listed ages are 3 to 12. It holds 4.5 stars from 775 ratings, the lowest rating on this page.

It suits a group on the sand where kids and adults can all join in. The honest catch: it is a paddle and ball game, not a digging toy, so it adds group play on the beach but does not replace a bucket set.

Best for throwing games: NERF Sports Vortex Aero Howler

Best for throwing games: the NERF Sports Vortex Aero Howler, because the listing describes a classic long distance foam football that howls as it flies.

The listing describes a flight optimising tail and a hand grip for a firm hold, and says the howling sound lets you hear how far it is going. It holds 4.7 stars from 7,117 ratings.

It suits open stretches of sand where older kids and adults want long throws. The honest catch: it is a foam football, not a sand toy, and the listing gives no age range.

How to choose beach toys

Match the set to the age on the listing

Ages vary a lot across these picks. The Hape, Green Toys and John Deere sets are listed for 18 months and above, the Dantoy set for ages 2 and above and the Weehoey set for ages 3 to 12. The JOYIN, Simba and NERF listings give no age range, so check the full listing before you buy them for a very young child.

Sets, moulds or games

A complete set such as the Hape or Green Toys one covers digging and carrying. Moulds such as the Simba cones add shaping, and a game such as the Weehoey set or the NERF football gives older kids something to do once the sand play slows down. Most families end up with one set plus one extra.

Beach toys for older kids

Sand toys suit younger children best. For 7 to 10 year olds and older kids, the listings here point to games: the Weehoey set is listed up to age 12 and the NERF Vortex Aero Howler is made for long throws. The Simba moulds also work for kids who like building.

Materials

The Hape and John Deere listings describe plastic, with the John Deere set called heavy duty. The Dantoy set is the one with a different material: a bio based plastic derived from sugarcane. The NERF listing describes a foam football. The remaining listings do not specify their material.

Beach, sandpit or pool

Bucket sets such as the Dantoy listing say they suit beach, sandpit and garden play, so they earn their place at home too. If your kids have a backyard sandpit, see our kids sandpit guide. If you want a shaded base on the sand, our beach tent guide covers that.

What beach toys do you actually need for a day at the beach?

A bucket, a spade and a rake cover most digging, which is what the Hape and Green Toys sets give you. Add moulds such as the Simba set if the kids like building, and a game such as the Weehoey set or the NERF football for when the sand play slows down.

What is the best set of beach toys for sharing between kids?

What is the difference between beach toys and pool toys?

Beach toys such as the Hape, Green Toys and Simba sets are for digging, scooping and building in sand. Pool toys are made for floating, diving and splashing. The Simba listing says its moulds can also be used in the swimming pool, but the Dantoy set suits sand and water play together.
