It carries the lowest star rating of our eight picks at 4.0, but from five ratings, so treat that as thin data, not a warning.

If you are patching thin spots rather than starting a lawn, the WOLF Garten Turbo Reseeding pack is the most reviewed product here by an enormous margin, with 14,557 ratings behind its 4.2 stars. If money decides it, the Lawn Pro Special Blend is the cheapest pick and the cheapest per square metre, at roughly 79 cents for each of the 35 square metres its listing claims.

Warm climate buyers in Queensland, the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia should look at the Hortico Kikuyu Lawn Seed Blend, framed on its listing for full sun and loam soil. And the thing nobody selling seed will tell you: if you want a Sir Walter style buffalo lawn, seed is not the route. Buffalo is laid as instant turf.

How do the eight grass seeds compare on price, coverage and rating?

Coverage decides whether a pack is good value, and it is the number retailers bury. A $27.70 bag covering 35 square metres beats a $41.56 box covering 25, whatever the sticker says. The table divides each live price by the coverage its listing states.

The planting window reads April to October, a northern hemisphere calendar; in Australian terms that means the mild shoulder seasons, so spring is your window in most of the country.

The review base is overwhelmingly European, so almost none of those 14,557 ratings come from someone facing a Perth summer or a Brisbane wet season. The 25 square metre coverage is also small for the price: anything bigger than a car space needs two boxes.

At $60.57 it is the second dearest pack here, about $1.51 per square metre, which lands mid field because 40 square metres is generous for one kilogram. The listing frames it as a wear tolerant mix for play areas and sports fields, the same brief as a family backyard with kids and a dog.

This is an Italian product and every review we could read is from an Italian buyer, so there is no Australian feedback behind that 4.3 average. The breakdown is turf type perennial ryegrass at 32 per cent by mass with a minimum 85 per cent germination and 98 per cent purity, creeping red fine fescue at 32 per cent with the same minimums, controlled release fertiliser at 28 per cent, and a granular wetting agent at 8 per cent. That is a specification, not a marketing claim, and it tells you only about two thirds of the bag is seed.

That is genuinely useful. Ryegrass gives fast green cover, fine fescue handles shade, the fertiliser feeds seedlings without a separate application, and the wetting agent helps water penetrate the dry, water repellent soil in worn tracks and under trees.

Three ratings, tied with the Hortico kikuyu blend for the smallest review base here. At $42.99 it sits mid field, but the seller states no coverage area, so cost per square metre cannot be calculated. You also pay seed prices for a bag that is 36 per cent not seed, and both grasses are cool season, so this is a southern states repair kit.

Is a premium European reseeding mix worth the money?

The COMPO Turbo Reseeding pack is the dearest product here, and it is the honest counterweight: well reviewed, well specified, and still one we would only buy on a markdown.

What it has going for it is real. With 292 ratings behind a 4.1 star average it has the second largest review base here, behind the WOLF Garten box. It covers 50 square metres from 1 kg, the most generous coverage of any single pack here, bringing the cost to about $1.72 per square metre. Sun exposure is stated as partial shade, and the listing gives a soil temperature threshold of at least 10 degrees Celsius sustained, more useful than a calendar date.

The instructions are clear too: spread the seed by hand over loosened soil cleared of weeds and stones, rake to about one centimetre deep, then water regularly. That soil temperature rule is the most transferable advice in this category, because it works regardless of hemisphere.

It is the priciest pick here by more than $25, and it is aimed at repairing an existing lawn rather than establishing one. Negative reviews cluster around total germination failure, which usually traces back to soil temperature or watering, but there are enough to notice. What should you look for when buying grass seed?

Grass seed is one of the few garden purchases where the wrong choice is not obvious for six weeks, by which point the money and the season are gone.

• Warm season or cool season. This is the whole decision and everything else is detail. Couch and kikuyu are warm season grasses suiting Queensland, the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia. • Germination and purity percentages. A quality seed line states a minimum germination rate and purity, usually around 85 and 98 per cent. Purity matters because impurities in cheap seed are often weed seed, which is how people sow a weed problem into a clean seedbed.

How do you look after a newly sown lawn?

Most seed failures are watering failures. The seed is rarely the problem, and the fix costs nothing but attention for three weeks.

Prepare first. Every listing here that gives instructions says the same thing: clear weeds and stones, loosen and level the soil, and do it a week before you sow rather than on the day. Seed on compacted ground has nothing to root into and washes away in the first decent rain.

One of the most visible kikuyu products on Amazon Australia: fertiliser coated kikuyu plus a nursery cover grass, and 1 kg claiming 100 square metres, far more than anything in our picks. It sits at 3.6 stars from 17 ratings, the lowest average we looked at seriously. Several buyers report poor germination, and one who read the packaging reports the blend is 4 per cent kikuyu and 96 per cent annual ryegrass. If so, the coverage figure makes sense and the name does not.

Fine couch blends. Couch is a legitimate warm season choice for high traffic, full sun yards. The ones on Amazon Australia are priced like outliers, at $144.80 for 2.5 kg and $289 for 7.5 kg, and carry one rating or none. Buy couch seed from a dedicated turf seed supplier instead.

Biodegradable seed mats. These roll out with seed embedded and look like the perfect shortcut. The ones on Amazon Australia sit between 2.1 and 3.1 stars across several hundred ratings, the clearest negative signal in this category, with buyers reporting patchy strike and mats that dry faster than bare soil.

Buffalo seed, including Sir Walter. Heavy search demand, very little worth buying, because the popular buffalo varieties are not reliably grown from seed. Price rolls of turf instead and save yourself a failed season.

Kentucky bluegrass and dichondra blends. Niche rather than wrong. The Kentucky bluegrass blend we looked at holds a single rating, and the dichondra ground cover blend sits at 2.8 stars from three, above $140. Neither cleared the bar.

How long does grass seed take to germinate?

Most listings here describe visible germination within three to ten days in mild conditions, with fast reseeding mixes at the quicker end and kikuyu at the slower end. Kikuyu is slow to establish, which is why it is usually blended with a faster companion grass that greens up first. Soil temperature drives timing more than any brand claim: below about 10 degrees Celsius sustained, seed sits and waits.

Can you grow buffalo grass from seed in Australia?

Not reliably, and this is the biggest mismatch between what Australians search for and what is worth buying. Popular buffalo varieties, including the Sir Walter type lawns people mean, are established as instant turf rather than from seed. Budget for rolls of turf instead.
