Lip gloss is one of the few makeup buys where the $3 tube and the $19 tube can both be genuinely good, which is why the category is so confusing. Search for one in Australia and you land on a retailer category page with hundreds of products in no order, or a United States roundup full of shades that never reached Amazon Australia.

This guide fixes that. We pulled the Amazon Australia lip gloss listings, kept only glosses sold here, and read the listed specification on every one: finish, coverage, applicator, stated volume and formula notes. Seven made the cut, from a shimmer that starts around $3 to a high shine Italian formula. NestPath does not swatch products in a studio, so nothing below is a wear claim. This is a selection guide built from what the listings state and what buyers have rated.

What is the best lip gloss in Australia right now?

If you want one gloss that covers almost every occasion, buy the KIKO Milano 3D Hydra Lip Gloss 32. It is the highest rated of our seven picks at 4.7 stars, the listing describes the texture as non sticky and long lasting, and the soft felt applicator is shaped to contour the lip line rather than smear across it. It is also the dearest of our seven picks.

If you would rather spend less and still get a shade you reach for daily, the NYX Professional Makeup Butter Gloss in Tiramisu is the most reviewed gloss of our seven picks, with light to medium coverage and a warm nude tone.

And if this is your first gloss, or you want a spare to live in a handbag, the essence BIRTHDAY BOMB shiny lipgloss is the cheapest of our seven picks and still rates 4.6 stars across more than 1,400 reviews.

How we evaluated these lip glosses

  • Stock and price came straight from Amazon Australia, so every pick was available to buy here when this guide was written.
  • Star ratings and review counts came from Amazon Australia product data, and a headline pick needed a substantial review base rather than a handful of scores.
  • Specifications came only from the listings: finish, coverage, item form, applicator, stated volume and formula flags such as vegan or paraben free.
  • We spread the picks across finishes and price bands instead of stacking seven near identical nude glosses.

Best lip gloss overall for high shine that does not feel tacky

The KIKO Milano 3D Hydra Lip Gloss in shade 32 is the pick we would hand to someone who wants a gloss to look expensive without behaving like glue. It is the highest rated of our seven picks at 4.7 stars from more than 29,000 reviews, which is a rare combination of volume and score in this category.

4.7(29,475)

It is the highest rated of our seven picks at 4.7 stars from more than 29,000 reviews, and the listing is unusually specific about the texture not sticking. The soft felt wand is shaped to contour the lip line, so you get a clean edge without a liner underneath.

The listing puts it in the high glossy finish class with a liquid item form, and the description is unusually specific about the texture: it says the formula does not stick and that it lasts a long time. That matters more than shade choice, because stickiness is the most common reason a gloss ends up unused in a drawer. The colour is a pearly natural rose, so it reads as a your lips but better shade.

The applicator is a soft felt wand rather than the usual sponge doe foot, and KIKO designed it to be dragged from the centre of the lip outward. That gives a cleaner edge without needing a liner underneath, which is why we put it ahead of the cheaper options for anyone who wears gloss to work or to an event. The formula is built around Bidens extract with vitamin E, and the listing flags it as non comedogenic and cruelty free.

It is made in Italy, carries an 18 month period after opening mark, and comes in a metal capped tube. If you only buy one gloss this year, buy this one.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is the dearest of our seven picks, and the listing sometimes shows a price range rather than a flat number depending on shade and seller, so check what you are adding to the cart. The unit count field is also filled out badly on Amazon, showing a nonsense volume, so you are buying on shade and brand rather than a stated millilitre figure. Shade 32 is a soft rose, so if you want a red or a deep berry you need a different shade code.

Best cheap lip gloss for a shade you will actually wear daily

NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu is the most reviewed gloss of our seven picks, sitting at 4.4 stars from more than 75,000 reviews. Holding that score across such a large review base says the formula is doing something right.

Tiramisu is a warm brown nude with a pink lift, listed with a warm undertone and medium shade depth. Coverage is stated as light to medium, the sweet spot for a gloss you apply without a mirror. The description calls the texture buttery soft and silky smooth, and it is sold as something you can wear alone or layer over a lipstick.

The pack is a 9 gram tube with a doe foot wand in the cap, which is the most forgiving applicator style if you are new to gloss. NYX also publishes a comparison grid on the listing showing this as the glossy cream option in its lip range, versus the matte products beside it, which is useful if you are deciding between a gloss and a liquid lipstick.

It is listed as cruelty free but not vegan, and the ingredient list is a classic mineral oil and polybutene gloss base with beeswax. Nothing clever, just a formula buyers keep repurchasing.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The finish is listed as shimmery rather than clear glass, so if you want a flat wet shine with no pearl in it, look at the Revlon instead. Tiramisu is popular enough that it sometimes ships from a third party seller at a silly markup, so check the seller before you buy. The listing also states beeswax, which rules it out if you are shopping vegan.

Best budget lip gloss for a first makeup bag or a handbag spare

The essence BIRTHDAY BOMB shiny lipgloss in 01 Cake My Day is the cheapest of our seven picks and the easiest recommendation in the guide. It rates 4.6 stars from more than 1,400 reviews, which is the second highest score of our seven picks behind the KIKO.

It is a sheer milky base with pink shimmer particles, listed with a shimmery finish, a non sticky product benefit and a long lasting additional feature. The scent is birthday cake, which sounds gimmicky and is, but essence leans into that and its buyers clearly do not mind.

The formula is built on ethylhexyl stearate and castor seed oil with sweet almond oil, stevia extract and vitamin E, and the listing flags it as paraben free. The stated unit count is 10 millilitres, the largest listed volume of our picks that state one in millilitres.

essence recommends wearing it alone for a fresh natural look, or over a liner when you want definition, and that second use is where a sheer gloss earns its place. Buy two: one for the drawer and one for the bag.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is sheer, so it will not cover a lip on its own the way a pigmented gloss does, and the shimmer is pink rather than neutral so it warms up whatever is underneath. The review base is the second smallest of our seven picks, so there is less long term feedback than on the NYX or Maybelline lines.

Best lip gloss if you want a hyaluronic acid formula

Maybelline Lifter Gloss in Honey'd Toast is the pick for anyone who wants the marketing story and the ingredient list to line up. It rates 4.5 stars from more than 39,000 reviews, the second largest review base of our seven picks.

Sodium hyaluronate sits on the ingredient list alongside coconut oil and vitamin E, and the listed benefits are moisturising, filling, softening and non sticky. A gel item form in 5.4 millilitres with an XL wand, and the second largest review base of our seven picks.

Sodium hyaluronate sits well down the ingredient list alongside coconut oil and vitamin E, and Maybelline lists the benefits as moisturising, filling, softening and non sticky. The item form is a gel rather than a straight liquid, which is why it reads thicker on the lip.

The stated volume is 5.4 millilitres and the finish is listed as high glossy with sheer coverage and a warm undertone. Honey'd Toast is a soft warm neutral, the sort of shade that works over a bare lip in the morning and a lipstick at night. Maybelline calls the wand an XL applicator and gives three step directions on the listing, including a second layer focused on the centre of the lip for more dimension.

This is the gloss to buy if you want one product doing two jobs, sitting between a lip treatment and a colour.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Coverage is listed as sheer, so despite the thicker gel feel it will not replace a lipstick. The Lifter Gloss line is enormous and Amazon Australia carries only some shades reliably, so a specific number may need to come from elsewhere. There is fragrance in the ingredient list, worth knowing if you react to scented lip products.

Best lip gloss for colour that stays after the shine fades

NYX Lip I.V. in Drippin' in Rose is the only pick here sold as a gloss stain rather than a plain gloss, and that is the whole reason it is in the guide. It rates 4.3 stars from more than 11,000 reviews.

The idea is a water breaking formula that gives instant wet shine, then leaves a tint behind as the gloss layer wears off. NYX lists it with a glossy finish, sheer to medium coverage, a 5 millilitre capacity and hydration described on the pack as lasting 12 hours. It is infused with magnesium, vitamin B12 and coconut water, in 10 shades.

It is also the only pick here whose listing states a vegan formula, described as free of animal products and by products, and it is flagged cruelty free. If you are shopping vegan and want a gloss rather than a balm, this is the shortlist.

Practically, a gloss stain suits anyone who hates reapplying. You still lose the shine over a few hours, but you do not end up with a bare lip and a ring of colour around the edge, which is the usual failure mode of a heavily pigmented gloss.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It has the second lowest star rating of our seven picks at 4.3, and the reviews pulling it down tend to be about shade payoff being sheerer than the swatch image suggests. A stain is also harder to remove at the end of the day, so you want a cleansing balm or oil rather than a face wipe. The listed 5 millilitres is modest for the price band.

Best lip gloss for layering over lipstick

Revlon Super Lustrous The Lip Gloss in Taupe Luster 306 is the topcoat pick. It rates 4.5 stars from more than 11,500 reviews, and a formula with that much feedback behind it is well understood.

The topcoat pick, with an oversized reservoir wand that lays shine over a lipstick in one pass. Agave extract, moringa oil and cupuacu seed butter sit alongside the polybutene base, in a 3.8 millilitre tube flagged paraben free.

Revlon describes it as a multidimensional wet shine without the heavy sticky feel of traditional glosses, and the listed benefits are hydrating and moisturising with sheer coverage and a high glossy finish. Agave extract, moringa oil and cupuacu seed butter sit alongside the polybutene base, and it is flagged paraben free.

The applicator is an oversized reservoir wand, which picks up more product per dip than a standard doe foot. That is what you want when you are adding shine on top of a lipstick you have already applied, because you lay it down in one pass instead of dragging back and forth and disturbing the colour underneath.

Shade 306 is a cool toned taupe, and Revlon lists the full range at 24 shades from crystal clear through to deep browns and reds. If you already own lipsticks and just want them to look wet, this changes the finish of everything you own.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The stated volume is 3.8 millilitres, on the small side for the price band, and Amazon Australia stocks only a fraction of the 24 shade range at once. Taupe Luster is a cool, muted shade that can look grey over a warm lipstick, so match your undertone first. The listing notes rosin, which some people prefer to avoid on lips.

Treat the plumping description as exactly what it is: a manufacturer claim on the listing, not an outcome we can promise. What we can tell you is what is in it. Menthone glycerin acetal and vanillyl butyl ether are the ingredients behind the warm tingling sensation these formulas are known for, and they sit alongside hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, avocado oil and apricot kernel oil.

The item form is listed as a cream rather than a liquid, the finish is high glossy and the coverage is stated as medium, which is more pigment than most of the sheer glosses here. The stated unit count is 4.6 grams and SHEGLAM flags it as cruelty free.

Buy it if you are curious about the plumping style category and do not want to spend designer money finding out whether you like the sensation.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It has the smallest review base of our seven picks at 430, so the evidence behind it is thinner than the rest of the guide. The tingle is not for everyone, and on sensitive or chapped lips it can sting rather than feel pleasant. SHEGLAM shade names also change between markets, so check the swatch image rather than the name.

What should you look for in a lip gloss?

Four things decide whether a gloss gets used or abandoned: how sticky it feels, how much colour it puts down, what the applicator is shaped like, and whether the shade suits your undertone. Price barely features, which is why our cheapest and dearest picks both score above 4.5 stars.

Stickiness is the big one. Polybutene makes a gloss shiny and it also makes it tacky, so brands balance it against oils and esters. Listings that explicitly say non sticky are at least committing to it in writing, and four of our seven picks do.

Coverage tells you what job the gloss can do. Sheer means a topcoat or a bare lip product. Medium means it can stand alone as your only lip colour. If you already own a drawer of lipsticks, buy sheer. If a gloss is the only lip product you own, buy medium.

How do our picks compare on coverage and applicator?

This is the comparison retail category pages never give you, and the fastest way to work out which pick fits how you use lip products.

Is a lip oil a better option than a gloss?

A lip oil is the main alternative to a gloss. Oils are thinner, less shiny and far less sticky, and they are sold as a treatment first and a colour second. A gloss is the opposite: shine first, comfort second. If you want a wet looking lip in photographs, buy a gloss. If you want comfort on a dry lip, an oil or a proper balm is closer, and our lip balm guide covers that side of the shelf. We have deliberately not ranked lip oils here, because they are a different product with different criteria.

What about plumping glosses?

Plumping is a subtype of gloss rather than a separate category. The formulas use warming or tingling ingredients, and the only honest way to write about them is to report what the manufacturer lists. Our SHEGLAM pick lists plumping among its product benefits and names the tingling ingredients openly. Treat that as a description of the sensation the formula is built to create, and buy it because you want to try that finish.

How do you look after lip gloss in an Australian summer?

Here is the detail the overseas roundups never mention: Amazon Australia flags six of our seven picks as heat sensitive items, and the seventh, the Revlon, carries a safety line telling you to keep it away from naked flame or direct heat sources. Every gloss here is a product the manufacturer expects to be kept cool.

That has a real consequence in an Australian car. A closed car in a Brisbane or Perth car park in February gets far hotter than the air outside, and a gloss left in a door pocket will separate, thin out and sometimes leak past the cap. If you keep a spare in the car, accept that you are treating it as disposable, which is another argument for the cheapest pick here rather than the dearest.

Beyond heat, the rules are simple. Do not share a gloss wand, because it goes back into the tube every time. Wipe the neck before you close it so the cap seals. Check the period after opening symbol on the base of the pack, which on the KIKO is 18 months, and throw a gloss out if the smell changes or the texture separates. Store tubes upright rather than on their side, and keep them in one pouch rather than loose in a bag, which our toiletry bag guide can help with.

You will also want these lip kit extras

A gloss on its own is fine. A gloss with a liner and a scrub behind it is the difference between good and finished.

The competition, and why these glosses missed the cut

Plenty of good glosses sit just outside this list. Rimmel London Oh My Gloss 6Hr is a well reviewed cheap gloss on Amazon Australia and is genuinely fine, but the essence pick beats it on price and rating, so it would have duplicated a job the guide already covers. Maybelline Lifter Gloss in Peach Ring is the same formula as our Honey'd Toast pick in a different shade, and it was not consistently available when we checked.

Romand Glasting Color Gloss is the Korean option most people ask about, and it is a lovely product, but it was not consistently available when we checked, and it would sit in the premium slot the KIKO already holds. SHEGLAM Glass Lock Air Gloss is a cheaper sibling of our SHEGLAM pick with no plumping angle. essence CHOCO BOMB is our budget pick's line in a chocolate scent, a shade preference rather than a different recommendation.

We also left out the unbranded six and twelve piece gloss sets that flood the search results. They look like value, but the review counts are small, the formulas are undisclosed and the shade ranges are unusable. A single good tube beats a box of twelve.

Lip gloss questions Australian buyers ask

What is the highest rated lip gloss in Australia?

Of the seven glosses in this guide, the KIKO Milano 3D Hydra Lip Gloss 32 has the highest star rating at 4.7 out of 5 from more than 29,000 reviews. The essence BIRTHDAY BOMB shiny lipgloss is next at 4.6 stars, and the Maybelline Lifter Gloss and Revlon Super Lustrous The Lip Gloss are tied at 4.5 stars.

What is the best lip gloss that actually stays on?

A gloss stain is the closest thing to a long wearing gloss, because it leaves a tint behind as the shine wears away. The NYX Lip I.V. is the only pick in this guide built that way, and its listing describes an over time lip staining effect. No gloss stays glossy all day, so if you want shine at 4pm you will be reapplying whatever you buy.

Is lip gloss or lip oil better for dry lips?

A lip oil or a balm is formulated as a care product first and colour second, which is what to reach for when lips are dry. A gloss is formulated for shine, and a sheer gloss will sit on top of flaky skin rather than smooth it. Use a scrub, then a balm, then a gloss on top if you want both comfort and shine.

How much should you pay for a lip gloss in Australia?

Anywhere between about $3 and about $20 buys a good gloss on Amazon Australia, and price does not strictly determine star rating in this guide. Spend more if you want a better applicator, a nicer package and a more refined texture. Spend less if you want a spare tube, a first gloss, or something you will not mind losing.

Does lip gloss go bad in the heat?

Six of the seven glosses in this guide are flagged as heat sensitive on their Amazon Australia listings, and the seventh carries a warning to keep it away from direct heat sources. Heat can thin the texture, separate the oils and cause the tube to leak past the cap, so a hot car is the worst place to store one.
