What should you look for in shade cloth?

Five specs decide whether a shade cloth is right, and only one is the number on the front of the packet.

Shade factor. The share of light the fabric blocks. Roughly, 30 to 50 per cent suits seedlings, ferns and greenhouses you grow under all season; a 99 per cent aluminet is a short-term summer overlay rather than something to grow under. Seventy per cent is the default for people spaces such as pergolas, patios and play equipment. Ninety per cent and above suits animals, hot windows and privacy screening. It is a fabric spec, not a sun safety rating.

Knitted or woven. Knitted fabric is interlocking loops, so a cut edge holds rather than unravelling and it stretches slightly instead of tearing at a fixing point. Woven fabric frays hard when cut and needs a hemmed or heat-sealed edge. For a backyard job, knitted is the type you want.

Fabric weight. Grams per square metre tells you how much fabric is there. The Instahut roll here states 100gsm, a light domestic weight suited to 50 per cent shade.
