Best kit for clear gel candles: Blingfun Jelly Candle Making Kit

Gel candles are a different craft and this is the only kit here that does them. Blingfun supplies 900 g of gel wax in seven colours, a melting pot, a stirring spoon, wicks, wick stickers, wooden wick holders, glitter, decorative candle crystals, a bunch of dried flowers and an instruction sheet. The set weighs 1.29 kg and holds 4.3 stars from 309 ratings, the fourth largest review base among our picks.

The appeal is that gel sets clear, so anything you suspend in it stays visible. Shells, dried flowers, crystals and glitter read like an ornament rather than a candle, which makes these popular for wedding tables and kids' rooms. Soy and beeswax cannot do this: they set opaque.

Gel is stickier than soy, holds bubbles if you stir hard, and wants clear glass rather than a tin so the effect shows. Pour slowly down the inside wall and let bubbles rise before it sets. Buy it as a second kit: it will not teach the soy skills most candle making is built on, and it includes no vessels.

Which candle making kit should you buy?

What should you look for in a candle making kit?

Start with wax weight, then melter, then vessels. The rest is decoration.

Wax weight, not piece count. A 200 ml jar takes roughly 150 to 170 g of soy wax, so 1200 g of soy makes about seven jars that size and 488 g makes about three. Piece counts in the hundreds are almost always wick stickers. If a listing will not state the wax weight, assume it is on the small side.

A melter you can control. Soy wants melting well past its melting point so fragrance binds, then cooling before it goes in the jar: heat to around 80 to 85 C, stir fragrance through, pour at around 55 to 63 C. You cannot judge that by eye. Buy a kit with a digital or adjustable pot, or one with a thermometer, or add a kitchen probe thermometer yourself.

Vessels with lids. Tins and lidded jars protect a curing candle from dust and, in an Australian summer, from the heat that softens the surface. Open glasses look better but need somewhere cool to sit while the fragrance binds.

Fragrance quantity, not fragrance count. Six scents beats four only until you notice they are droppers holding a few millilitres each. Candles want a fragrance load of about 6 to 10 per cent by weight, so a 160 g jar takes roughly 10 to 16 g of oil. Small droppers scent two or three candles, not ten.

How do you look after your kit and your finished candles?

Cure first, trim always, store cool. Those three habits fix most problems people blame on the wax.

Cure before you burn. Give a soy candle at least three or four days, ideally one to two weeks, before the first light. In that window the fragrance oil binds into the wax crystals, which is what produces scent while the candle burns rather than only in the cold jar.

Trim the wick to about 5 mm every time. An untrimmed wick mushrooms, smokes and throws soot up the glass. A trimmer or nail scissors before each burn is the highest value habit in candle care.

Store wax and candles out of the heat. Soy container wax softens at temperatures a parked car, a north facing windowsill or an uninsulated garage hits on a hot Australian day. A cupboard on an internal wall is ideal, and leftover wax belongs in a sealed bag so it does not pick up kitchen smells.

Clean the pot while the wax is warm. Wipe the melter with paper towel before it sets, then wash, and never pour wax down the sink.
