Spring hits and suddenly you can see everything: the grout behind the taps, the greasy film on the rangehood, the smear on the shower screen no spray has ever shifted. A steam cleaner deals with all of it using heat and pressure instead of another bottle of chemicals.

This guide is about steam cleaners, not steam mops. A steam cleaner is a cylinder, canister or handheld unit with a hose and a box of nozzles, and it goes wherever you point it: oven racks, tile grout, taps, car seats, window tracks, mattress seams. A steam mop is a stick with a pad on the bottom and it only does floors. If floors are the actual job, our best steam mop guide is the one you want. If the job is everything except the floor, or floors plus everything else, you are in the right place.

Two more fences. A steam cleaner is not a carpet extractor, so it will not suck dirty water back out of a rug; that is our carpet cleaner guide. Nor is it a garment steamer, which hangs off a rail and relaxes creases out of a shirt; that is our garment steamer guide. We checked what is purchasable on Amazon Australia now, pulled ratings and review counts, read the spec sheets, and picked seven.

What is the best steam cleaner in Australia?

For most Australian homes the answer is the Karcher SC 3 EasyFix. It is a cylinder unit that heats in about 30 seconds, runs 3.5 bar of steam through a 2 metre hose, and includes a floor kit so it covers the floors as well as everything above them. It also has the feature Australian buyers forget to check until it is too late: a built in descaling cartridge for hard tap water.

If you want the same class of machine with a shoulder strap and a longer track record, the Polti Vaporetto Go is the most reviewed of our picks by a wide margin and pushes the same 3.5 bar from a 1500 W boiler. It is the runner up for anyone whose targets are grout, oven racks, shower screens and the car.

And if you have never owned one, the Suu66 Handheld Steam Cleaner is the cheapest of our seven picks, comes with 19 accessories and a safety lock, and will tell you inside a weekend whether steam is a tool you keep using. Plenty of people find out it is, and upgrade later.

How do our seven steam cleaner picks compare?

Steam cleaners come in three shapes, and shape matters more than brand. Cylinders sit on the floor, hold a litre or more and give you a hose and wands. Canisters are the same idea on wheels, with runtime in hours. Handhelds are kettle sized, heat fast and run out in about ten minutes.

How we evaluated these steam cleaners

NestPath is a research desk, not a laboratory. Every number below came from the live Amazon Australia listing and the manufacturer spec sheet.

  • Star rating and review count pulled live, with a floor of 25 reviews for anything in the top three.
  • Stock and buy box price confirmed on Amazon Australia, so nothing here is a listing that went dark.
  • Published specs compared like for like: pressure in bar, tank volume, heat up time, runtime, accessories.
  • Anything that is really a steam mop, carpet extractor or clothes steamer was cut, however well it sells.

Best steam cleaner overall: Karcher SC 3 EasyFix

The SC 3 EasyFix is the one to buy if you only want to own one steam cleaner. It is a cylinder unit with a 1 litre tank, 3.5 bar of steam pressure and a 2 metre hose, and Karcher quotes 30 seconds from cold to steam, the quickest heat up of any pick here that publishes one, tied with the ALLESM handheld. A unit that takes twelve minutes to warm up gets dragged out on a Saturday. One ready before the kettle boils gets used on a Tuesday night.

KÄRCHER

Kärcher SC 3 EasyFix Steam Cleaner, 30 sec heat-up

4.3(558)

It is the one steam cleaner that covers the whole house. A 1 litre tank rated at roughly 75 square metres, 3.5 bar through a 2 metre hose, a floor kit in the box, and a heat up time of about 30 seconds that decides whether the machine gets used on a Tuesday or only on long weekends. The built in descaling cartridge is the detail that matters most in hard Australian tap water, and it is the only pick here whose listing mentions one.

The tank refills mid job without waiting for the boiler to cool, which is the difference between doing a bathroom in one pass and doing it in two. Karcher rates a full 1 litre tank at roughly 75 square metres, enough for a two bedroom unit before you touch the tap. The EasyFix floor head takes a microfibre cloth on velcro, and the same machine swaps to a hand nozzle for benchtops, a point jet for grout lines and a round brush for tap bases.

Two things set it apart. The first is the integrated descaling cartridge, and this is the only one of our picks whose listing mentions one; in hard capital city tap water that is the difference between a machine that lasts years and one that furs up. The second is the child lock on the steam trigger, which matters when the machine lives in a hall cupboard at toddler height.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It sits at the premium end of this list, and the sticker will make you hesitate if steam cleaning is still a hypothesis rather than a habit. The 1 litre tank is generous but you will refill it during a full house clean. Steam control is two levels rather than a fine dial, so on delicate finishes you regulate by holding the nozzle back.

Best steam cleaner for grout and bathrooms: Polti Vaporetto Go

The Vaporetto Go has the deepest track record here. It carries 2760 ratings on Amazon Australia, the most reviewed of our picks by a wide margin, and Polti has been building steam boilers in Italy for decades. It runs 3.5 bar from a 1500 W boiler and puts out a quoted 90 grams of steam a minute, which is the figure that predicts how fast baked on grease lets go.

It carries 2760 ratings on Amazon Australia, the most reviewed of our picks by a wide margin, and it runs the same 3.5 bar as the machine above it from a 1500 W boiler. The complete 14 piece kit stores on board and the whole unit slings over a shoulder, so grout, oven racks, shower screens and a car interior are all one trip. Polti also states British Allergy Foundation approval for mites and allergens.

The 0.75 litre tank is modest for a cylinder, and that is a deliberate trade. The unit weighs 4 kilograms, has a carry handle and a shoulder strap, and stores all fourteen accessories on board, so it goes up a ladder or out to the driveway without a second trip. The kit is unusually complete: floor brush, extension hose, lance, window washer, curved nozzle, spatula, nylon brush, brass brush, grout tool, cloth, funnel and jug.

Polti states that the Vaporetto Go is approved by the British Allergy Foundation for its effectiveness against mites and allergens, which we repeat only because the listing makes the claim. If dust mites in a mattress are why you are shopping, that is a third party mark rather than marketing copy. The safety cap will not open while the boiler is under pressure, the feature that matters most on any pressurised unit.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Six minutes to heat is slow, and with a 0.75 litre tank you will refill on any job bigger than a bathroom. The listing calls it handheld, which is optimistic for a 4 kilogram boiler; treat it as a small cylinder you carry between rooms. No child lock is listed, so it needs to live out of reach.

Best budget steam cleaner: Suu66 Handheld Steam Cleaner

If you have never owned a steam cleaner, buy this one first. The Suu66 is the cheapest of our seven picks, carries 683 ratings at 4.2 stars, and answers the only question that matters before you spend real money: will you use it? For most people the answer is yes for benchtops, taps, shower tracks, oven racks, high chairs and car vents, and no for anything involving a floor.

4.2(683)

It is the cheapest of our seven picks and it answers the only question that matters before you spend real money: will you actually use a steam cleaner? A 1200 W element, a 500 millilitre tank, about three minutes from cold and 19 accessories cover shower tracks, splashback joins, fridge seals and the grout behind the toilet. Treat it as a precision tool rather than a house cleaning system.

The spec is honest for the money: a 1200 W element, a 500 millilitre tank, about three minutes from cold and a listed maximum temperature of about 120 degrees Celsius, which the listing gives as 249 degrees Fahrenheit. Nineteen accessories come in the box, including brass and nylon brushes, an extension tube, a steam head, a towel sleeve and a garment bonnet, plus a funnel, jug and measuring cup. There is a safety lock on the trigger and a heat light indicator.

It earns its keep on detail work a mop cannot reach: shower door tracks, the join between splashback and benchtop, the fridge door seal, the grout behind the toilet. Fill it, wait three minutes, work one zone, put it away. It is a precision tool, not a cleaning system. If you want floors covered too, our hard floor cleaner guide has the machines for that.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The listing spec table quotes 110 volts, which does not match an Australian outlet, so check the plug and the plate on arrival and send it back if it is not a local unit. A 500 millilitre tank at full steam empties in well under fifteen minutes and needs to cool before a refill. And no bar figure is published, so you are buying on watts and reviews rather than measured pressure.

Best compact steam cleaner: Karcher SC 1

The SC 1 is what you buy when you want Karcher build quality without a cylinder taking up half a cupboard. It weighs 1.81 kilograms, which is the lightest of our picks that publish a weight, runs 3 bar of steam from a 1200 W element and reaches working pressure in about three minutes. The tank holds 200 millilitres, the smallest of our picks, and Karcher rates that fill at about 20 square metres of surface.

Karcher build quality without a cylinder taking up half a cupboard. At 1.81 kilograms it is the lightest of our picks that publish a weight, it runs 3 bar from a 1200 W element and reaches working pressure in about three minutes, and the 200 millilitre tank covers about 20 square metres. Small flats, tiled wet areas and households where storage is the binding constraint.

That small tank is the whole design argument. Two hundred millilitres does a bathroom, a rangehood or a car interior, and it keeps the machine one handed. The 4 metre cable does a kitchen from one power point. The kit is tight: hand nozzle, point jet nozzle, power nozzle, round brush, microfibre cover and measuring cup. A floor kit and extra brushes are sold separately.

With 928 ratings behind it the SC 1 is a known quantity rather than a punt, and it carries the same child lock as the SC 3. For a one bedroom flat, a townhouse with tiled wet areas, or any home where storage is the binding constraint, this is the more sensible Karcher of the two even though it does less.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It holds the lowest average star rating of our seven picks at 4.0, and the recurring complaint is exactly what the spec predicts: people expect a floor cleaner and receive a hand tool. Three bar is real work but it is the lowest quoted pressure among the picks that state one, and a 200 millilitre tank means constant refilling on anything larger than one room.

Best steam cleaner for long sessions: McCulloch MC1385 Deluxe Canister

The MC1385 is the machine for a whole house, an end of lease clean or a car you are trying to sell. It is the dearest of our picks and the most serious: a 1.9 litre tank, a quoted 120 minutes of continuous steam on one fill, 23 accessories and 58 psi of pressure from a 1500 W boiler. That runtime is the longest quoted of any pick here.

That runtime is the longest quoted of any pick here.

It is an upright canister on wheels rather than something you carry, and at 11 kilograms that is the right call. You roll it behind you and work off the hose. The steam on demand trigger holds pressure in the boiler and releases it only where you need it, which is why a two hour runtime is realistic. Variable control drops the output for sealed timber or a car dashboard and lifts it for oven racks.

McCulloch sells it as designed for Australian conditions and names the surfaces plainly: sealed tile, laminate and vinyl floors, carpets, benchtops and cabinets, bathrooms, windows, car interiors and outdoor furniture. Only 55 people have rated it, which is thin, but they average 4.1 stars. If you have a large house and no interest in refilling a boiler four times, this is the one.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Twelve minutes to heat is the slowest of the picks that publish one, so you switch it on and go and do something else. Eleven kilograms is not going up a ladder and it is awkward on stairs. And 55 ratings is a small sample next to the four figure counts on the Polti and the handhelds.

Best high pressure handheld: ALLESM Handheld Steam Cleaner

The ALLESM is the handheld for when the enemy is baked on kitchen grease. It quotes 3.5 bar, matching the two cylinder units at the top of this list, out of a 1500 W element in a body you hold in one hand, and reaches steam in about 30 seconds, tying the Karcher SC 3 for the quickest heat up of the picks that publish one. With 910 ratings at 4.1 stars it is one of the better evidenced budget handhelds on Amazon Australia.

The 450 millilitre tank is quoted at roughly eight to twelve minutes of steam, which the listing frames honestly as one focused job rather than a house clean. That is the right way to think about every handheld. You clean the cooktop and splashback edges, or the shower tracks and one section of grout, and then you are done. Ten attachments cover the ground: angled brushes for corners, cloth heads for lounges and car seats, an extension hose, a glass scraper and detail heads for ovens.

The cord is a shade over 3 metres, enough to cover a kitchen from one outlet. For a renter, a small unit, or anyone whose cleaning happens in fifteen minute bursts rather than scheduled sessions, this is the shape that gets used.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The listing contradicts itself: the title quotes 1500 W and a 30 second heat up while the specifications block quotes 2500 W and 15 seconds, so buy on the conservative figure. There is no published weight or child lock, and the tank must depressurise before a refill, which on a busy kitchen bench is a pause you did not plan for.

Best big tank steam cleaner: Rolipo Steam Cleaner

The Rolipo is the pick for people who hate refilling. Its 2 litre tank is the largest of our picks, it runs a 2000 W element, and it ships with 15 accessories and a child lock. It also holds the highest star rating of our seven picks at a clean 5.0, though on only 24 ratings, which is a small enough sample that we would not put it at the top of the page on that basis alone.

It also holds the highest star rating of our seven picks at 5.0, though on only 24 ratings.

What it does well is sustained work. Two litres covers a bathroom and a kitchen back to back, or a full car interior, without a cool down in the middle. The listing points it at car detailing, upholstery, carpets, lounges, wallpaper and windows, and the accessory count backs that up. The child lock matters because three of our seven picks do not list one at all.

Karcher is the only brand with two entries on this list, and the Rolipo sits alongside them because a large tank plus a locked trigger is a family friendly combination. If your house has a lot of hard surfaces and small people, and you would rather do one long session a fortnight than five short ones a week, this is the shape that suits.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Twenty four ratings is thin, and a perfect 5.0 on that few reviews will drift down as more arrive. The listing publishes no steam pressure in bar and no heat up time, so two of the five numbers we normally compare are missing, and it gives no weight either. And a full 2 litre tank is heavy to carry to the tap and back.

What should you look for in a steam cleaner?

Five numbers decide whether a steam cleaner is any good, and only two are on the box.

Steam pressure in bar. This is the number that shifts grime. Three bar is workable, 3.5 bar is what the good domestic units run, and a listing that will not publish a figure is asking you to trust wattage instead. Watts tell you how fast the water heats, not how hard the steam hits. Roughly 14.5 psi equals one bar.

Tank volume, and whether you can refill hot. A 200 millilitre handheld does one bathroom, a litre does a small flat, two litres does a house. The hidden spec is whether you can top up mid job or must wait for the boiler to depressurise, because a cool down turns a forty minute clean into ninety.

Heat up time. Thirty seconds gets used on weeknights, twelve minutes gets used on long weekends. This number predicts how often the machine leaves the cupboard.

Descaling. Australian tap water is hard in most capitals and scale is what kills steam cleaners. A built in cartridge, a rinsable tank, or a manufacturer that sells a descaling sachet all count. A sealed boiler with no descaling story has an expiry date.

Accessories that match your surfaces. A point jet nozzle for grout, a brass brush for oven racks, a nylon brush for anything softer, a window tool and a cloth covered hand nozzle. Count the useful ones, not the total on the box.

No steam cleaner can lift dirty water back out of fabric. If your problem is a stained rug or a lounge with a history, you want an extractor, and our carpet cleaner comparison covers those.

A word on safety. Steam leaves these machines at around 100 degrees Celsius or hotter and will scald skin instantly, so keep the nozzle away from your hands, never aim it at a person or pet, and store the unit and its cord out of reach of children. Where a listing makes a sanitising claim, we repeat it as the manufacturer words it and nothing more.

How do you look after a steam cleaner?

Steam cleaners are simple machines with one failure mode: scale. Everything below exists to delay it.

  • Use the water the manual specifies. Some units are rated for tap, some ask for distilled. In hard water areas filtered water stretches the interval between descaling jobs.
  • Empty it after every session. Water left sitting in a warm boiler is how you get scale rings and a musty smell. Tip it out and let it dry with the cap off.
  • Descale on the manufacturer schedule. If the machine has a cartridge, replace it when told. If not, run a descaling solution through it a few times a year and rinse until the water runs clear.
  • Wash microfibre pads separately, no softener. Softener coats the fibres and kills the grab that makes microfibre work. Warm wash, air dry.
  • Check the seal and safety cap. The gasket on a pressurised cap perishes over years. If steam escapes around the cap rather than the nozzle, stop and replace it.
  • Try any new surface in a corner first. Unsealed timber, laminate joins, waxed floors, plasterboard and some vinyls dislike sustained heat, and concentrated steam on a cold window can crack the glass. Warm panes from a distance, then move in.

What else will you need?

A steam cleaner arrives with nozzles but never enough cloth, and cloth is what carries the dirt away.

The competition

Four units came close and missed, and two whole groups were ruled out. The Karcher SC 2 EasyFix sits between the SC 1 and the SC 3 and is a good machine, but the two Karchers we picked already cover both ends of that range.

The McCulloch MC1375 is the smaller sibling of our canister pick: 1.5 litres, 90 minutes of steam and 20 accessories against the MC1385 with 1.9 litres, 120 minutes and 23. Fewer reviews and a shorter run, so if you are buying a canister, buy the bigger one.

The Wagner Spraytech 915e is a capable multipurpose steamer, but its primary listed job is wallpaper removal, which makes it a renovation tool. The Bissell SpotClean HydroSteam and similar spot cleaners also keep appearing in steam cleaner searches; they are carpet and upholstery extractors that spray and suck rather than steam, and they belong in a different guide.

Several cheap handhelds under $50 carry four figure review counts at 3.5 stars. The recurring theme is inconsistent pressure and a short working life, not a trade worth making on a machine running at 100 degrees Celsius.

Steam cleaner questions, answered

Which is the best steam cleaner to buy?

For most Australian homes the Karcher SC 3 EasyFix is the best all rounder, because it heats in about 30 seconds, runs 3.5 bar of steam through a 2 metre hose, includes a floor kit and has a built in descaling cartridge for hard tap water. If your budget is tighter, the Suu66 handheld covers benchtops, taps, grout and car interiors from about $65. For a whole house in one session, the McCulloch MC1385 runs a quoted 120 minutes per tank.

Are steam cleaners actually worth it?

They are worth it if your house has hard surfaces and you are tired of buying spray. Steam shifts baked on grease, soap scum and grout grime with heat and pressure instead of chemistry, which means no residue on food preparation surfaces. They are not worth it if your problem is carpet stains or plain mopping, because an extractor and a steam mop do those better.

What are the downsides of steam cleaning?

Three real ones. Heat up and cool down time means a steam cleaner is slower to start than a spray bottle, and most units need to depressurise before you can refill them. Sustained heat can damage unsealed timber, waxed floors, laminate joins and some vinyls, so every new surface needs a hidden trial patch. And the steam itself is around 100 degrees Celsius or hotter, so it scalds skin instantly and must be kept away from children and pets.

What is the difference between a steam cleaner and a steam mop?

A steam cleaner is a cylinder, canister or handheld unit with a hose and a set of nozzles, and it cleans anything you can point it at: grout, ovens, taps, shower screens, car seats, window tracks and mattress seams. A steam mop is a stick with a microfibre pad and it cleans sealed hard floors and nothing else. Some steam cleaners add a floor head so they do both, but a steam mop will never do the detail work.

Can you use tap water in a steam cleaner in Australia?

It depends on the machine, and the manual is the authority. Australian tap water is hard in most capital cities, and mineral scale is the main thing that kills steam cleaners. Units with a built in descaling cartridge, such as the Karcher SC 3 EasyFix, are designed to handle tap water. Without one, filtered water extends the interval between descaling jobs.

Handheld Steam Cleaner with Safety Lock, 500mL Large Tank & 19PCS Accessories - Multi-Surface Deep Cleaning for Kitchen, Bathroom, Car, Sofa - Removes Stubborn Grime, Sanitizes Surfaces (White)

Kärcher SC 1 steam cleaner, steam pressure: 3 bar, heating time: 3 min, power: 1200 W, surface performance: 20 m², tank: 200 ml, with hand, point jet and power nozzle, microfibre cover

4.0(928)

Karcher build quality without a cylinder taking up half a cupboard. At 1.81 kilograms it is the lightest of our picks that publish a weight, it runs 3 bar from a 1200 W element and reaches working pressure in about three minutes, and the 200 millilitre tank covers about 20 square metres. Small flats, tiled wet areas and households where storage is the binding constraint.

4.1(55)

The canister for a whole house, an end of lease clean or a car you are trying to sell. A 1.9 litre tank, a quoted 120 minutes of continuous steam on one fill, 23 accessories and 58 psi from a 1500 W boiler, all on wheels so you roll it behind you and work off the hose. That runtime is the longest quoted of any pick here.

Handheld Steam Cleaner, 1500W, 3.5 Bar High-Pressure Steam, 30s Heat-Up

4.1(910)

A handheld that quotes 3.5 bar, matching the cylinder units at the top of this list, out of a 1500 W element you hold in one hand. It reaches steam in about 30 seconds, tying the Karcher SC 3 for the quickest heat up of the picks that publish one, and the 450 millilitre tank is quoted at roughly eight to twelve minutes, which is one focused job rather than a house clean.

5.0(24)

For people who hate refilling. Its 2 litre tank is the largest of our picks, it runs a 2000 W element, and it ships with 15 accessories and a child lock. Two litres covers a bathroom and a kitchen back to back, or a full car interior, without a cool down in the middle. It also holds the highest star rating of our seven picks at 5.0, though on only 24 ratings.
