What is the best chalkboard for an Australian home?

For most homes it is a framed magnetic chalkboard you can hang in the kitchen or hallway, and the one we would buy first is the Loddie Doddie Magnetic Chalkboard. It is a proper reusable board with a wooden frame, a magnetic surface for notes and photos, and thousands of Australian and overseas owner reviews behind it. This guide is about framed, reusable chalkboards only. We deliberately left out chalkboard paint, peel-and-stick films and vinyl decals, because those are a wall finish rather than a board you can take with you when you move, and they are a different buying decision entirely.

We looked hard at what actually matters once a chalkboard is living on your wall: whether the surface is magnetic, how the frame is built, whether it can hang on a renter-friendly adhesive strip instead of screws, and whether it survives a humid Australian kitchen without ghosting (that grey haze old chalk leaves behind). Below are six boards worth your money in 2026, from a small kitchen board to a full-height freestanding A-frame, each with a price and rating pulled fresh at the time of writing.

The quick answer: our three headline chalkboards

If you just want a recommendation, start here. The Loddie Doddie Magnetic Chalkboard is our top pick and the most-reviewed board of everything we looked at, which makes it the safe default for a kitchen or entryway. If you want the board to run your household, the Umtiti Calendar Chalkboard prints a month grid straight onto the surface so it doubles as a planner. And if you are buying for a child or just want the cheapest way in, the SOL Chalkboards for Kids board comes with chalk and an eraser in the box.

The other three picks cover the bigger jobs: a large statement wall board, a slightly smaller premium wall board, and a freestanding double-sided A-frame for a cafe counter, a party or the front driveway. Every board here is in stock at Amazon Australia at the time of writing.

How we evaluated these chalkboards

NestPath does not run a workshop full of test rigs. We study the listings, the owner reviews and the specs the way a careful first-home buyer would, then we sanity-check every price, rating and stock status against Amazon Australia on the day we publish. Four things drove the shortlist:

  • Real reusable boards only. Framed slate, MDF or steel surfaces you write on with chalk, not paint, film or peel-and-stick decals.
  • Owner reviews at volume. We favoured boards with a genuine track record, and our top pick needs a solid rating across hundreds or thousands of reviews.
  • Fit for Australian homes. Magnetic surfaces for notes, frames that suit a rental, and sizes that actually fit a kitchen or hallway wall.
  • Honest value. Sane pricing for the size, with the current buy-box figure captured fresh so the number on the card is the number you pay.

Best chalkboard overall: Loddie Doddie Magnetic Chalkboard

The Loddie Doddie Magnetic Chalkboard is the board we would put on most kitchen walls without a second thought. At about 28 x 36 cm it is the classic small-to-medium size that fits beside a fridge or in an entryway, the surface is magnetic so you can pin a school note or a photo with a magnet, and the frame gives it enough presence to look deliberate rather than like a leftover. It is by a wide margin the most-reviewed board of our six picks, and it holds a strong rating across thousands of owners, which is exactly the kind of track record you want from something that lives on your wall for years.

4.6(3,377)

It hits the sweet spot of size, price and reassurance, and it is by far the most-reviewed board of our six picks. It erases cleanly, works with chalk or liquid markers, and the magnetic backing turns it into a household command centre.

Why it wins: it hits the sweet spot of size, price and reassurance. It erases cleanly, it works with both traditional chalk and liquid chalk markers, and the magnetic backing quietly turns it into a command centre for the household. It comes ready to hang, and because it is light you can put it up with adhesive picture strips instead of drilling, which matters if you are renting. If you only read one entry in this guide, this is the board to buy.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is a compact board, so if you were dreaming of a huge cafe-style wall you will want one of the larger picks below. Magnetic chalk surfaces also hold lighter magnets best, so very heavy fridge magnets can slide. And like any dark board, it shows chalk dust in raking light until you wipe it down, which is normal rather than a fault.

Best chalkboard for running the household: Umtiti Calendar Chalkboard

The Umtiti Calendar Chalkboard is the only calendar-layout board of our picks, and it is the one to buy if you want your wall to actually organise the week. The month grid is printed onto the magnetic surface inside a rustic solid pine frame, so you chalk in birthdays, bin nights and appointments and simply wipe and reset at the end of the month. At around 27 x 37 cm it sits neatly in a kitchen nook or a home office, and the magnetic surface means you can clip a permission slip or an invitation next to the dates.

The only calendar-layout board of our picks, and the one to buy if you want your wall to organise the household. Nobody has to redraw the grid, and the solid pine frame feels a step above cheaper boards.

Why we picked it: for families and share houses, a fixed calendar beats a blank board because nobody has to redraw the grid. It offers a lot of structure for a fair price but trades a little flexibility, and the solid pine frame feels a step above the thin mouldings you see on cheaper boards. Reviewers repeatedly describe it as the thing that finally got the whole house onto the same page.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The printed grid is fixed, so if you would rather draw freely most of the time, a plain board suits you better. The chalk lines on the calendar rules can smudge if you lean a hand across them before they set, and you will want a fine liquid chalk marker rather than a fat stick to write inside the smaller date squares.

Best budget chalkboard: SOL Chalkboards for Kids

The SOL Chalkboards for Kids board is the cheapest of our six picks and the easiest way to see whether a chalkboard earns its place in your home. It is a small wooden-framed board of about 21 x 28 cm that comes with chalk and an eraser in the box, so it is genuinely ready to use the moment it arrives. Marketed for children, it works just as well as a little kitchen memo board, a craft-table sign or a lunchbox-note station.

Why we picked it: not everyone needs a large magnetic board, and this one lets you spend the least while still getting a real framed chalk surface rather than a flimsy card. It is light, it is safe around kids, and the bundled chalk and eraser save you a second purchase. For a first board, a gift or a second board for the playroom, it is hard to argue with the price.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

This is the lowest-rated board of our picks, and the reviews reflect a simpler product: the surface and frame are basic, and the included chalk is ordinary school chalk rather than anything premium. It is not magnetic, so it is a writing board only, and the compact size means it is for notes and doodles, not a family planner.

Best large statement chalkboard: U Brands Rustic Wood Frame

The U Brands Magnetic Chalkboard is the largest wall-mounted board of our picks at 91 x 61 cm, and it is the one to buy when you want the chalkboard to be a feature of the room rather than a memo pad. The rustic timber frame reads as farmhouse-kitchen or cafe, the surface is magnetic, and the generous writing area gives you room for a full weekly menu, a big welcome message or a proper doodle wall for the kids.

Why we picked it: it is a well-known brand with hundreds of reviews and a size that most ranges simply do not offer at this price. A board this large changes how a wall feels, and because it is still a framed magnetic panel rather than a slab of slate, it stays light enough to hang without a builder. If you have the wall space and want impact, this is the pick.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A board this size needs a proper wall and ideally two anchor points, so it is less renter-friendly than the smaller boards unless you use heavy-duty adhesive strips rated for the weight. The large surface also drinks more chalk when you fill it, and a big blank board shows uneven erasing more than a small one, so a good wipe-down routine matters.

Best mid-size wall board: Better Office Products Magnetic Chalkboard

The Better Office Products Magnetic Wall Chalkboard is the highest-rated board of our six picks, and it is the smart middle option between a memo board and a full statement wall. At 46 x 61 cm it gives you real writing space in a rustic wood frame that hangs happily in portrait or landscape, and the magnetic surface handles notes, magnets and light photos. It is the board to choose if you want quality and size without going all the way to the biggest option.

Why we picked it: it earns the best owner rating in this guide, the frame and surface feel considered, and the vertical-or-horizontal flexibility suits an awkward hallway or a home office alcove. It is a genuine all-rounder that would be the top pick in a lot of homes if the Loddie Doddie did not have such a commanding review count behind it.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It has fewer total reviews than our top two picks, simply because it is a slightly newer listing, so there is less crowd data to lean on. The mounting hardware is basic, and as with the other magnetic boards here, the magnetic pull is best kept to lighter magnets rather than a fridge-magnet collection.

The QUEENLINK Standing Chalkboard is the only freestanding board of our picks and the only one built to go outside, which makes it the answer for a cafe counter, a market stall, a wedding welcome sign or a driveway sale board. It is a double-sided A-frame with a 48 x 100 cm magnetic panel on each face, so you write once and passers-by read it from both directions, and the weather-resistant build means a bit of drizzle will not wreck it the way it would an indoor timber board.

Why we picked it: nothing else here stands on its own two feet, and for anyone who needs a moveable sign rather than a wall fixture, that changes everything. It folds for storage, it carries a full menu or an events list, and being double-sided it does the work of two boards. It is the dearest of our six picks, but you are paying for a floor-standing frame and outdoor durability, not just the writing surface.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is a newer listing with a smaller review count, so there is less long-term owner feedback than on our wall boards. It is also the most expensive and the bulkiest to store, and outdoors in the wind an A-frame needs weighting down. Rain can wash traditional chalk off, so for outdoor use pair it with waterproof liquid chalk markers.

What to look for in a chalkboard

A chalkboard is a simple thing, but a few details decide whether you love it or quietly resent it. Here is what actually matters.

Magnetic or plain. A magnetic board has a thin steel panel behind the black surface, so it doubles as a note holder for photos, invitations and school slips. A plain board (usually slate or MDF) only takes chalk. For a kitchen or family hub, magnetic is worth it. For a kids' doodle board or a decorative sign, plain is fine and cheaper.

Frame and build. A solid timber frame lasts and looks intentional. Thin printed mouldings can chip and look cheaper in person. If the board is going in a humid kitchen or bathroom hallway, a sealed frame copes better than raw MDF.

Size and mounting. Measure the wall and remember chalkboards want breathing room around them. Small boards up to about half a metre hang easily on heavy-duty adhesive picture strips, which is ideal for renters. Larger boards are heavier and are better on wall anchors or screws into a stud.

Chalk type. Traditional chalk wipes off with a dry cloth but is dusty. Liquid chalk markers give crisp, bright, almost permanent lines and are brilliant for menus and signs, but they need a damp cloth or a wet-erase routine to remove, so test a corner first. Outdoors, only liquid chalk survives rain.

Still deciding on the format? A chalkboard is the warm, tactile option, but if you want to wipe notes clean in a second a dry-erase whiteboard may suit better, and if you mostly want to pin paper rather than write, look at a corkboard instead. Many homes end up with one of each.

Care and maintenance: how to season and clean a chalkboard

The single most useful trick with a new chalkboard is to season it before you write anything. Take a stick of chalk on its side and rub a thin layer over the entire surface, then wipe it off with a dry cloth. This fills the fresh, porous surface evenly so your first proper message does not leave a permanent ghost outline. Skipping this step is the number one reason a brand-new board looks patchy forever.

For everyday cleaning, a dry microfibre cloth or a felt eraser lifts traditional chalk. Every week or two, wipe the board with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully before writing again, because writing on a wet board smears and can stain. If ghosting builds up over time, a cloth with a little white vinegar and water cuts through it. Liquid chalk markers need a damp cloth or a dedicated wet-erase spray, and stubborn marks lift with a magic eraser sponge. Never use an abrasive scourer, which scratches the surface and makes future ghosting worse.

You'll also want these chalkboard accessories

The board is only half the kit. These are the extras that make it a pleasure to use, all on Amazon Australia.

The competition: boards we did not pick

A few popular options did not make the shortlist, and it is worth knowing why. Peel-and-stick chalkboard wallpaper and magnetic wall decals, like the many arch-shaped sticker boards on Amazon, are genuinely popular, but they are a wall finish rather than a framed board you can rehang or take with you, so they sit outside the scope of this guide. The same goes for chalkboard contact paper and chalkboard paint.

Among framed boards, some large hanging cafe boards had very few reviews and inconsistent build feedback, so we left them out in favour of boards with a real track record. Multi-packs of tiny tabletop message signs are handy for a party buffet, but they are not the wall or freestanding board most people are searching for. And we skipped whiteboard-and-chalkboard combo boards, because a hybrid tends to do neither job as well as a dedicated board, and the whiteboard side is a separate decision covered in our dry-erase guide.

Chalkboard FAQ

Which chalkboard is the best?

For most Australian homes the best chalkboard is a framed magnetic wall board, and our top pick is the Loddie Doddie Magnetic Chalkboard because it pairs a fair price with the strongest review record of any board we looked at. If you want the board to organise your week, a calendar board like the Umtiti is better, and for a cafe or outdoor sign a freestanding A-frame such as the QUEENLINK is the right shape.

Are magnetic chalkboards better than plain ones?

For a kitchen or family hub, yes, because a magnetic board doubles as a note holder for photos, invitations and school slips as well as a writing surface. A plain slate or MDF board only takes chalk, which is perfectly fine for a kids' doodle board or a decorative sign and usually costs a little less. Decide by how you will use it rather than by price alone.

Can you use liquid chalk markers on a chalkboard?

Yes, and they give crisp, bright, almost permanent lines that are ideal for menus and signs, but they behave differently to traditional chalk. Liquid chalk needs a damp cloth or a wet-erase routine to remove rather than a dry wipe, so always test it on a corner first, especially on a porous or unsealed board. Outdoors, liquid chalk is the only kind that survives rain.

How do you stop a new chalkboard from ghosting?

Season it before the first use. Rub a stick of chalk on its side across the whole surface to lay down a thin even layer, then wipe it off with a dry cloth. This primes the fresh, porous surface so your first real message does not leave a permanent ghost outline, and skipping this step is the main reason a new board looks patchy forever.

Can I buy a chalkboard at Bunnings or Officeworks?

You can find some chalkboards and blackboards at Officeworks and occasionally at Bunnings, but the in-store range is usually limited to a few sizes and styles. Buying online gives you far more choice of framed magnetic boards, calendar boards and freestanding A-frames, and it lets you compare current prices and owner ratings before you commit, which is how we chose the six boards in this guide.

Keep setting up your home office and walls

A chalkboard is one piece of a well-organised home. If you are still kitting out the space, these NestPath guides pair well with it.
